Excellent despite lack of Canadian warranty
I purchased this (US Version) for $1404.00 and with tax this came out to $1589.00. As another reviewer has already commented, you can not register this lens for warranty because (1) you would need an US address (2) US prooff of purchase. Because this was purchased through amazon.ca , I will have to live without the warranty. The alternative would have been to purchase the CAN version for $1999.99 + $260.00 tax. I figured the $700.00 savings is worth the risk of no warranty. Now for the lens its self. The very first shots it took were hand-held at at 600mm (shutter speeds from 250-500). I was blown away by the sharpness and clarity. This lens is quite heavy and not particularly easy to hold steady. The VC modes seemed to deal with my unsteady hands quite well. In most cases, however, I would recommend a tripod.Next I compared this lens with my nikon 70-300m taking some shots of smal text on a street sign both lenses were set at 300mm. At the very least, the Tamron was at least as sharp. While its weight of 5 Lbs doesnt seem that big of a deal, it certainly weights me down when combined with the rest of the gear AND now the need to carry a tripod. With some of the great results I have been getting so far I will live with this extra "burden"

An incredible telezoom workhorse
I was concerned about this lens from some of the negative reviews, but after using it heavily over the past month, I have nothing but praise for it.This lens is sharp. Tack sharp. Ridiculously sharp. Its focus plane at 600mm, even at f/8, is razor thin, so any front/back focusing will make shots unusable. Verify that your copy is good with a test strip before heading to the field to avoid frustration. Mine was fine out of the box, and the crazy fast AF finds focus instantly to boot. When using the focus limiters it's even faster. It's less of a journey to focus as the motor turns, like on my Nikkor AF-S G 50mm, and more of only a slight delay before "you have arrived at focus." This is shooting on a Nikon D750, which has a good, but not the best, AF system. I find the manual focus ring essentially unusable because the throw distance is so short, but I'm not sure why you'd need it on a lens with AF this effective.Chromatic aberration is essentially zero, and is the least of any lens I own, even wide open. I've forgotten about Lightroom's CR removal tool at this point.OS is amazing. I usually leave it in mode 1, but occasionally find modes 2/3 useful. If I get in a stable position I can easily shoot at 1/100 and below at 600mm, which is extremely handy when I don't want to setup my tripod. The only thing I wish this lens had/did is accept small rear filters. I haven't even tried putting filters on the front because they'd be so expensive and hard to carry around. I already have to deal with 150mm square filters for my 15-30mm, and that's about all I'm willing to put up with in a single backpack. Being able to use little 52mm circular polarizers or the like would be really nice, but truthfully I don't find myself wanting filters very often when using this lens. The enormous lens hood pulls double duty keeping dust and debris off the objective, and it's easy enough to clean with good lens wipes. The tripod collar is well-designed and just works. It's unremarkable in its functionality in that it does what it's supposed to.I can't believe this lens goes for as cheap as it does, even at full retail. If you get a good copy, you'll have no regrets. If you get a bad copy, that's why you buy from Amazon.

Great lens when you need it
Overall, I was really happy to have this lens when visiting Alaska. It is nice to have the ability to see things really far away. The only real major down side, as you can imagine, is the size of the lens. Put simply, I have my full camera kit with a large selection of lenses, and then there is this beast, both take about the same amount of effort to lug around. You need to really plan on using this lens to bother carrying it around, it is not the type of lens you are going to have on you just in case you might need it.
