What a life story!
Very powerful! I usually use reading before bed to relax my mind to sleep but this book often had me contemplating many things. It brought up memories of a family life that didn't always make sense as a child but you did what you did because that is all you knew. As an adult it has been a struggle to navigate what I learned growing up on a farm with strong "male" values and reconciling this in a world where I have become educated and am a professional and self-sustaining women. You gave me lots to think about. Very admirable life and proud of how vulnerable you had to be to write this story. Amazing first book...definitely a profound journey...thanks for sharing.

Extremes
Was one of the best books I have ever read. Reminded me of the "Poisonwood Bible" but this was a memoir so true as her memory recalls. The world of loving your parents and siblings but coming to the realization that they were her scourge and trying to find her place in all of this. I hope this will not be her last book.

Valuable memoir for anyone who struggles with "family values" that don't sync with their own values
Excellent memoir. Beautifully and powerfully written.Initially I wondered whether I could finish the book because some parts are painful to read. Tara Westover made me flinch (and gasp and close my eyes) as she described the abuse she experienced. However I kept reading. I'm glad I read the whole book. It's a valuable memoir for anyone who struggles with "family values" that don't sync with their own values. This passage from 'Educated' resonated with me, "What is a person to do, I asked, when their obligations to their family conflict with other obligations to friends, to society, to themselves?"Tara Westover's life answers that question.

Memoir
Excellent memoir and the best I’ve ever read. Westover is careful to be as “objective” as one can be when writing about oneself. What is so amazing is how each child in the family turns out differently despite being raised in the same damaging atmosphere by off-the- grid parents. I was relieved to (spoiler alert) learn that Tara still remains alienated from her controlling and manipulative parents. In this case I agree that she is better off without them, as sad as that may be.
