An Incomplete History of Marijuana
Reefer Madness can be easily split into two parts. One is a great, highly researched history of marijuana and its legality in America. The other is a overly long and narrow look at marijuana and it's use by middle-class Jewish people in the 40's, 50's, and 70's. The history of legality follows Commissioner Anslinger of the Narcotics Bureau attempts to humanize the man who seemingly invented the scourge of marijuana. This third of the book successfully shows how one man can leave their mark on American laws. It shows how marijuana was never perceived as a threat until Anslinger created the threat out of thin air. Reefer Madness was written in 1979. It is unfortunate that we miss out on this highly researched information on the 80's forward. The last two thirds of the book are transcribed discussions the author has with a variety of middle-class Jewish people about the 40's, 50's, and 70's. No minorities or working class people are interviewed. The 60's are hardly discussed. Marijuana culture outside of America is barely talked about. For a sociologist, a very narrow slice of America is investigated.Simply put, this is not a comprehensive history of marijuana in the world or America. It is a good history of early marijuana hysteria and laws. Everything else is better viewed as a 200 page slice of life of the middle class' view of marijuana in the late 70's. I was hoping for more history and looks at cultures other than Americans from 35 years ago.

Reefer Madness, the book
Great history of marijuana in the U.S. How it became illegal, how the laws have changed, lots of name dropping.
