Depends on the bottle you are attaching it to. I have mine on 750 ml bottles. You end up with 650 ml due to the filters dispacement.

To be clear, this removes harmful pathogens but not harmful chemicals, correct?

It is my understanding that this filter removes parasites and bacteria. It doesn't remove viruses. See the manufacturer website for specific details.
