It works perfectly about 70% of the time. The problems are ragged edges so that you have to pick out little pieces of eggshell to avoid getting them in your egg. One thing to note is that you have to hold the egg in your hand while you use the Rosle in order to get the best cut.

I am interested in make serving vessels, does this cracker work on raw eggs? Please only answer if you have tried doing so...

Yes, it works well. That's the reason I bought it, actually. Take the top off the shell, make a rich creamy egg custard base, 3/4 fill the shells with the custard and a pinch of fresh herbs, or a pinch of finely diced sautéed mushrooms and some sort of meat, or foie gras, and float the filled shells on 180°F water to set them. You can set the custards with steam, also.

I want something that will make peeling hard boiled eggs (completely, not just the top) a very quick process - will this do the trick?

NO. The Rosle Egg Cracker Topper will not remove the entire shell from a hard boiled egg. It does a very beautiful job of creating a symmetrical crack around the top of a soft boiled egg which can be easily removed so that it can be eaten from the bottom of the shell.

Does it matter which end of the egg gets smacked? I thought one cracked the pointy end, but one reviewer mentions thwacking the rounded end. Thanks!

I would think the pointed end would be preferable so that enough of the egg removed to eat that remaining in the larger portion.
