2016 release from the singer/songwriter. Upland Stories continues and - with sprinklings of pedal steel, drums, electric guitar, and keyboards - expands the sound of his last acoustic set. Fulks's richly emotional storytelling is illuminated by his instrumental prowess and emotional voice. At 53, he is philosophically reflective, writing "with clear eyes and a full heart" (Ken Tucker, NPR). Don't get us wrong, his wit is still as quick as his picking; but it's reflected through the lens of fatherhood, marriage, middle age, and the literary voices he is drawn to and draws from: Flannery O'Connor, Anton Chekhov, Mary Lavin, Frank O'Connor, Javier Marias, James Agee. Three new songs-"Alabama at Night," "America Is A Hard Religion," and "A Miracle" - are meditations inspired by Agee's 1936 trip to Alabama, the sojourn that fueled his furious polemic on American poverty, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men

Glorious songs!
Robbie Fulks's voice is full of honest to goodness talent. His songwriting and singing are so perfect, his compositions so down to earth, they just left me with a feeling of supreme contentment. These are songs for a peaceful day, a time away from time :-). My favorites here are - Baby Rocked Her Dolly, Never Come Home, Needed, A Miracle, Katy Kay and Sarah Jane. These are songs with their heart in the right place :-) :-) :-)

A pleasing departure
Nicely done. Love the intimate feel. Fine storytelling with none of the hokey humor that is frequently RF's stock-in-trade. More, more! // extra notes from Aug 29: I can't get this one out of the car CD player. Fast becoming a major fav among a rather large collection of winners I've been lucky enough to find over the years.

Robbie Fulks has been working the Americana circuit before many people knew there was an Americana circuit. This is a good album for his fans and a good album to get to know him if you are new to his music.

My favorite album of 2016
I have friends who rave about Robbie Fulks. I had seen him perform once, had a good time but was not blown away. This changed all of that. Upland Stories is William Faulkner of Larry Brown, (take you pick of favorite southern gothic authors,) set to music. When I first got this CD I was listening to it two or three times a day. I was so taken with it that nearly three years later I've bought it on vinyl.

A Mature Artist at the Height of his Powers.
Upland Stories is a natural - and a very strong - follow up to Gone Away Backward. Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals is amazing.

A dark, sparse and reflective album by Fulks. A bit of a departure from his earlier work. This manages to hit you where you live!

Five Stars
Robbie Fulks is a national treasure. His latest album continues his rootsy country/Americana style.
