Bright - BUT SLAYED BY STATIC -- Now Ressurected!
2nd UPDATE: The original LED lamp, slain by static, is still Kaput! But now the entire purchase does not have to be a total loss:==> The original LED lamp, itself, is no longer useful but the 3xAAA battery box can be useful. It has has BOTH a long clip on one side to clip the the back of a hardcover book AND a flat, embedded (flush), dime-sized magnet on the reverse side. I tried using other gooseneck LED lamps with this battery box but the box's non-standard USB slot was just too darn narrow to accommodate almost every other LED I tried.RESURRECTION: Amazon now offers an extraordinarily bright, multi-LED, USB lamp with a built-in On/Off slide switch. This very bright LED lamp inserts easily into the battery box's narrow USB slot: Gino 16.3" Flexible Neck USB Plug 28 LEDs Black Reading Light for Laptop PC . This great, bright, 28 LED lamp makes the search for a replacement worthwhile to me.-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 1ST UPDATE 3-Star REVIEW -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --1ST UPDATE: Purchased in July '09 and reviewed 10 weeks later -- this _was_ wonderful 5-Stars. (See my review below.) Its eventual use was as a bright night table light where, over 28 months, it was used 2-3 times a week. All this time the only problem is the switch would frequently require 3 or more depressions to extinguish.THIS MORNING when the phone rang, as I reached to answer it, my hand grazed the LED's shell -- not its switch -- and it turned on. After the phone call I tried to turn the light off. No amount of switch depressions will extinguish the light -- IT IS PERMANENTLY "ON" as long as it has power -- it must be unplugged from the battery pack to stop the light. Now it is less useful than a switch-less laptop USB keyboard light because the short neck of this LED prevents illumination of the entire keyboard. The BATTERY COMPARTMENT base is useless as a power source for any other LEDs or as a power source for other USB devices because the USB plug on the lamp and the USB outlet on the battery compartment are both unusually narrow _and_ unusually deep. The unusual narrowness physically prevents most other USB from plugs from being inserted; they are just too "fat" to make it. The unusual depth means that even other narrow plugs which do fit the skinny opening will not make electrical contact; they are just not long enough to reach the recessed USB contacts deep inside the battery compartment. Amazing! Probably designed to prevent cross usage with other manufactures' equipment. I can't even use this to recharge a cell phone in a pinch.-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ORIGINAL 5-Star REVIEW -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --First, the bad news - I use a 17-inch laptop with some of the USB ports on the side, and the 8" flexible neck is simply NOT long enough to light up both sides of my keyboard.Second, this is a VERY GOOD light. It is bright enough to use as an indoor flashlight for finding things in a storage room, etc. It also works as a book light, clipping EASILY onto book covers and spreads a good, white light on both pages. The magnetic disk built in to the side opposite the clip comes in handy for positioning it in dark, powerless places. It makes a neat, bright night table light in an area without power. Finally, the battery compartment door opens easily and re-latches securely; the 3 AAA cells are easy to insert & remove. I am very glad I purchased it and am casting about for additional uses so that I might justify purchasing another. :-0

BEST READING LAMP EVER
After some years, my trusty little rechargeable reading light finally died and I jumped onto the internet to research what's available nowadays. I found that most complaints were over the light being too dim - three leds just didn't cut it. One person commented that the company that invented a good five-led reading light would make a fortune. Searching on Google for "best reading light" didn't come up with a particular product that I liked, so I went to good old Amazon and found this light. It's a five-led reading light that was primarily designed for a laptop keyboard (it has a USB plug at the bottom of the arm that plugs into the battery case, but you can plug it instead into the USB port on the side of your laptop and it lights up the keyboard without washing out the screen. If I were reviewing this lamp for that purpose I would also be very satisfied, but that's not what I use it for.)And a VERY GOOD reading light it is! The light is BRIGHT with that cool led color that makes the page light up but doesn't light up the room. The pages are better lit, I think, than under a 100 watt desk lamp. One of my pet peeves of my last reading light was that it had a short arm and the light shone down over the pages from the top of the book, not over and above the book. That is NOT an issue with this light. The arm of the light is flexible but stable, bends easily to where you want it and there it stays, and it's PLENTY long enough to get the light positioned way up and over the pages yet out of the way of turning pages. And in that position the entire book is completely lit. No need to shift the light from left to right as you read. Ahhhh, relief! It runs on two or three AAA batteries (can't remember which - I'm reviewing this at work). I was concerned due to the lamp's brightness that I'd be changing batteries frequently but I'm happy to say that my first set of batteries are going strong past the 10 hours the lamp's paperwork said to expect on a set of batteries. As the picture shows, it's rather larger than the little clip-on reading lights and is awkward to handle but all you have to do is pull the arm's usb plug out of the port in the battery case and it's now very easily kept on the nightstand or in a drawer or packed for travel. The clip on the battery pack is metal and very strong, no worries about breaking it off. On hardbacks, I find it works best on the back cover and stays put very nicely, no need to clip onto the pages since the arm is so long. On paperbacks, of course, one has to clip it onto the page . . . and that's my only gripe. As I said, the clip is made of metal but the edges of the clip are not rounded off - they are sharp and rough to the touch and when I clipped the lamp to the back pages of a paperback photographic book, the metal clip made small abrasions on the pages. I'm more careful now but I'm going to try a little fine sandpaper on those edges or put some scotch tape over them and that should handle the ONLY flaw in a reading light that I highly recommend. This lamp will make every Amazon bedtime book reader happy . . . and should make its company a fortune! Enjoy!

The lite of many uses
Bought the unit for my wife who likes to read in bed. She actually prefers to use it as a night lite for those times when she has the urge to use the bathroom. Its light and gives a nice soft glow that doesnt wake me.
