Works great!
When I discovered that my downspout drains were clogged and water was running down next to my foundation, I knew I had to act quickly. I installed 10' sections of 4" PVC drain pipe with these drainage emitters at ground level. They worked exactly as I'd hoped... the water is now draining away from my home. The emitters remain closed when not in use, opening only when necessary. We mow our lawns at a 1-3/4" height with a power mower, and I've not had any problem with these. I did actually change out the elbow... rather than using 4" PVC Sewer and Drain pipe (which is the type of pipe the elbow is designed to work with,) I used Schedule 40 PVC drain pipe which is slightly larger and much heavier. Using this pipe means that the pipe is far less likely to break and can certainly be cleaned out as necessary later on. I had to pick up an adapter that I placed into the Schedule 40 elbow, then used only the green emitter portion from this part. Some might say that's overkill, but it really didn't cost that much more to do it and I'm happy in the knowledge that I can clean this later as necessary, and that I won't have to replace the drain lines in the foreseeable future.

Beware!
Lasted 4 weeks. Now it doesn't pop up anymore. Tried sandpaper, files steel wool to smoothen the shaft then tried silicone lubricant, dry, WD40, graphite. Unfortunately nothing worked.

Pop Up Emitter
Pop up emitter works as advertised. Volume of water entering emitter is from 50' of 5" gutter down a 2"x3" downspout. Had to glue popup top to supplied elbow because entire top would come off during heavy downflow. This worked; however, it is now difficult to remove any debris from the elbow through the small lid. Neverthless, I am satisfied with the performance to date; and would recommend this product.

After a lawn service installed several of these pop-up drains, I took a serious look at them and installed several more at my house. Why? - Properly installed, the downspout from the house gutter runs right down into the ground. The water is then channeled underground away from the house whatever distance is appropriate using 4 inch plastic flexible drain pipe. There the pop-up drain emitter is installed. What I like is: a) I no longer have to mow around those concrete or plastic slashblocks, and b) the water typically leaves the drain emitter at a significantly slower velocity than a downspout, and in 360 degrees versus one direction, resulting in much less erosion of the soil. The last reason I installed a pop up drain was to provide a way to drain rain water from under my deck. I have corrugated plastic sheeting draining into gutters under my deck to protect the storage area underneath. However, the deck has latticework all around and I was looking for a way to route the rainwater. Using the 4 inch plastic flexible drain pipe I ran the drain underground under the latticework framing and away in the yard ending at the pop-up drain emitter. Works like a champ. Only drawback is that it needs to be inspected and cleaned out periodically - especially near trees.

Simple, but Effective Drainage Solution
The only problem I had with this item is figuring out what to call it, so that I could buy it. Somehow, the name "Pop Up Drain Emitter" didn't come instantly to my mind, and I had to dig around for some time to find it.It's a pretty simple device, but it works well in dispersing water by gravity pressure, which just lifts the center cover and bubbles the water out. When pressure is relieved, the cover drops back down, and loosely seals the opening, which should prevent any possible mosquito activity if any water remains in the pipe. There is a 1/4" hole in the bottom of the pipe, which allows the remaining water to drain out. I installed the emitter over gravel, which helps the drain.

Great for terminating downspouts away from the foundation
These little pop-ups are fantastic for terminating downspouts. Just take some black plastic drain tile with a downspout fitting, bury the tile as far as you wish to carry the water, then put this thing on the end. Just be sure to have it flush with the ground or your lawnmower will hit it. The lid closes when there is no water running, so it keeps rodents from nesting in your drain tile. This is a great little device.

not so good!
Flap does not open when water needs to flow. Also no way to lock the valve in place. Mower will suck it up and eat it! Will not buy again!

Great Replacement - Can It Be Sold Without The Elbow?
I have had to replace the same drainage emitter twice due to my own negligence while mowing. This has easily fit the bill. The only thing about is that I don't need the elbow - that is installed and buried in the ground already. Not sure how much the elbow costs as part of the overall cost of the product, but I wish they'd just sell the emitter without it. Or maybe I can just remember to not have my mower set so low when going over my problem one.

Heavy rain areas. Make sure to dig a drain ...
Heavy rain areas. Make sure to dig a drain pit under the pop-up. I widen the pre-cut drain slot. Placed ground fabric under elbow to keep dirt from clogging the slot. I used 10' of pipe with proper grade for flow. Ensure that you have grade where the pop-up is or water will pool.
