Three women on different paths in life
This movie is about the lives of three women on different paths. Annette Bening is VERY difficult and has to take care of her dying mother. She meets Jimmy Smits who is interested in her but she acts like a complete “weirdo”. There’s a hilarious scene where he starts screaming that at her. She has the most interesting story as Smits completely transforms her character. Naomi Watts is a young professional who is all about her career and pleasures. Finally Kerry Washington is infertile and wants to adopt a child. All of them go through ups and downs and you can guess that they will all connect somehow at the end. How they worked that out took some very good writing. My surprise was Samuel L. Jackson showing up and actually getting some in a movie. This was only the second time I’ve seen him do that in a film.

Hard to feel good about this movie, ending doesn't redeem it
Cons: Most of movie felt depressing, contaminated and raunchy. Didn't need all that to make poi its about characters. The sex scenes w adoptive couple also completely unnecessary, and just came off as vulgar w this nice couple. Made no sense why a Catholic agency would be placing a child w a couple that included atheist wife (unless she lied to the nun, as she was raised Catholic - but that would be inconsistent ,as she tells birth mother that she basically always tells the truth bc it is easier to remember ???). Although focus is mother and child, it felt disrespectful of fathers - actually anti-father, - w birth mother so adamantly focusing only on mother to be there for classes and during L & D. And I suppose we can chalk it up to contrived plot, that the attorney birth father is completely rejected by the attorney mother. That just seems strange, given that she supposedly has so many issues about being adopted and not knowing - oh that's right - her mother, as she cared not at all about her birth father. All seems more contrived and plausible rather than feeling convincing.(especially as the attorney father is such a glowing example of the perfect father. I think ANY woman would be VERY hard pressed to deprive that man of a child that he not only wanted, but would do everything to provide for and be supportive of, both mother and child.) Seems unrealistic that the attorney father could not have been identified after the mother died in childbirth. It should have been doable enough,. So again, contrived.Pros: Some positive character development and resolution w Annette Benning character, in several areas, which was nice to see. as well as with adoptive mother. (we actually don't even see the adoptive father after child is taken home.)But again, the positives are not enough to redeem this gratuitously coarse, obscene, movie. It was reaching in too many directions and did not have a cohesive feel. (like why did they even have to include the woman's sex scene w David Morse?? Gratuitous comes to mind.). It could have been SO much better. Also, liked Jimmy Smits in this a lot, although he played a minor role w/o a lot of complexity of his character revealed. That was Ok, bc his strong, quiet, supportive, nurturing role provided needed escape from the other creepiness.

Mother and Child
I really loved this movie which moved me to tears. Young Karen was forced to give her baby up for adoption at the age of 14; however, Karen never stopped thinking of her daughter. Thirty eight years passed since Elizabeth's birth without the two making contact which is where the story picks up. Both women had had hard unfulfilling lives & were alone with little to no close family ties up until this time. The point of the movie is that families do not have to be made up of blood ties. Families are the ones that you choose to spend time with & are not bound to race, economic status, religion, or race. The movie is about separation, loss, hope & the impact that choices made have on the entire family unit for years to come. This was a closed adoption in Karen's & Elizabeth's case 38 years ago requiring that 1 or the other leave a letter in hopes that the other will come looking. Today it is much easier to find birth parents & children. One of the social workers asked how this might impact families in the future. This is a movie well worth watching.

Great movie
A girl was 14 year old and gave birth to a girl, who was adopted. The adopted girl grew up to be a great lawyer and love sex but not emotional, then got pregnant. Another couple wanted to adopt a baby.

Such a Beautiful, heartfelt movie
I just fell in love with the movie and its characters. How tragedy and life's circumstances hardens people till they become vulnerable enough to shed their armor, and how love can find its place in your heart if you open yourself to it. I am not talking about just romantic love, just love in all forms. I know my review sounds esoteric but you just have to watch the movie to know what I mean. I hope everyone reading this watches this movie. It is a gem of a movie.

Well acted and poignant
I loved this film. Yes, there were some unanswered questions as well as some unrealistic plot directions, such as Elizabeth’s doctor not immediately hospitalizing her with a diagnosis of placenta previa in light of her age, advanced pregnancy, and significant risk to her and the child, but that notwithstanding, the general story was very moving, and the acting superlative. The supporting actors, especially one of my faves, Epatha Merkerson, were also wonderful. The scene in which she emphatically and forcefully tells her daughter to get her act together as a mother really said it all. How true! At its very essence, it’s a beautiful story of enduring love and commitment between parents and children, mothers and daughters especially, however complex those relationships might be. The script was wonderful, and the last scene very moving, essentially about being given a second chance, achieving acceptance, forgiveness, and as the character states, finding peace after years of terrible grief and regret. In short, a beautiful, heartfelt story.

Mother and child
