sorry I bought this
I have been spoiled by the really good readers and good production/editing values that have emerged in the audio book business. Unfortunately, Heirs of the Empire lacks everything that makes a book I enjoyed in print entertaining in audio. Reading a book aloud is a preformance art in which breath and emphasis are key to the experience. Don't waste your $ here.

A Family Affair
In the first couple of books in this series, we learned what formidable characters Colin and Jiltanith MacKenzie are. They had to be in order to single handedly resurrect an ancient interstellar empire, fight off an alien invasion and tame each other. In this book, we learn that their twin kids are chips off the old block. The human empire is not in as good a condition as it could have been. Treachery lurks in the highest realms of power as a traitor seeks to overthrow the emperor. In order to secure his own chance at the thrown, he has to get rid of all possible contenders to the throne. That includes the kids. He arranges to sabotage the ship they are serving. He doesn't count on their survival. He counts still less on their prosperity. The book tells two stories. The first is of the attempt to overthrow the emperor. The second tells the story of the kids marooned on a backwater planet stuck in a medieval society. In order to get home, they will have to overthrow the established society. Both stories are extremely well presented. This is not a "serious" work that makes you think. Its just fun.

Good but flawed and in need of repair
Putting aside annoyance with the voice of this series - I do not get the impression of listening to grown men, and his supposedly gruff tones are quite bleh - there is a major problem with this work. It is missing a chapter. More specifically it is missing the battle of Yortown which is an extremely important chapter in regards to character growth and plot. Without it, moving on seems almost silly, and certainly lacks the emotional punch it should have had.

Need more.
Vintage Weber. This is the first time he takes up the issue of the relationship of theocracy and the harm to society. Good story.

Condition incorrect
Said condition was good and I took that to mean the cover would at least be intact. Cover is missing chunks and had a huge tear in it. It appears that all the pages are there but I am sad about the cover condition.

Seeds of safehold
Just re-read this fantastic book, it rounds out the inheritance series which saw Colin McIntyre and A.I Dahak bringing a galactic empire back to life, saving an alien species and generally being the all round good guys. This book deals with Colin's offspring in an assassination plot, where they end up stranded on a medieval planet. If you've read Webber's safehold series you will see the seeds of the eventual storyline in the way the pardal church is fought by technology from the futuristic outsiders.Overall a great read, well worth curling up with and getting lost in the details of an alien culture.

Good end for the trilogy
My favourite part of the trilogy. A great melding of high tech and low tech. I only wish there was a part after this one to see what happens with the kids. A great ending to the series that leaves you wanting more.

Last part of trilogy
I loved the first two and only discovered this third volume by chance. Fairly typical of David Weber but less fighting than some. Main story of the children of the first books taking over a planet had dubious morality. They trained an army to allow them to call home for help.
