Greek Mythology for Teens: Classic Myths in Today's World

My Students LOVE it!
I've used this resource with my middle school students and it has been such a hit that I ordered Zachary Hamby's other book as well.It is not meant to replace exposure to classical mythology, but to be used as a supplementary resource. It has been incredibly helpful at engaging students and getting them excited about the world of Greek mythology. My students would beg me to read these plays, even after we had finished our unit on Greek mythology. As a teacher, it's an amazing feeling to witness that level of excitement in your students. The book is organized by common themes. Each section contains at least one play, passages on aspects of mythology that were introduced in the play, sample discussion questions, activities, and recommended movies. The plays include a cast list and are generally around 30 minutes when acted out in class. The students love the humor and sarcastic tone that is woven throughout them, it's definitely perfect for teens. There's also a pronunciation index in the back, which the students found very helpful.Like all readings, I highly recommend you preview the plays and passages because some involve issues of beastiality and sexual promiscuity, which you may not feel are appropriate for your age range.

Very useful for my upcoming Co-op Class
I will be teaching a co-op class about Greek Mythology soon, and this book will be a great help ! It teaches lots about each of the Gods and Goddesses and has lots of readers theater included ! I haven't read all of the stories yet, but the ones I have read were well done with a funny twist. My own 13 year old daughter seems excited about the book and class ! It's almost 200 pages, can't beat it for the price !

Good starter book for Greek Mythology!
This is a great book! It certainly isn't college level but it is fun and interesting.

Good if you have students who are not into the ...
Good if you have students who are not into the classics at all. IF you have die hard loyalist mythology-loving kids, there is just too much modernization and too many changes to be truly helpful. So many kids love Percy Jackson, and want to learn the stories behind it. These are super silly at best(the Midas story being genuinely funny and worthwhile), but usually just too sarcastic to even be funny. Sarcasm is like pepper- a little is clever, a lot ruins the soup. It could be right for a certain crowd. There is a lot to be learned from the rest of the text, with characters explained very well. It is a mixed bag. It is slightly better than the other book," Mythology For Teens" that the author also wrote. I wish I had been able to read a review like this before I purchased them both!

My students LOVE these plays
Teaching a gifted class on mythology this summer. My students LOVE these plays. When they walk in and see that we are going to do another one, they actually cheer. The stories are shortened and the language is far more appropriate for keeping a young audience engaged. We have excellent discussions based on the questions posed in the book as well as the additional stories and talking points.

Wish I had this sooner!
Bought it after teaching mythology to 7th and 8th grade. Like the Greek god story told in a modern version skit style.

Excellent Resource
I seldom write a review, but I felt compelled to brag on Mr. Hamby for this excellent resource. I've taught English for 16 years, but this is my first to teach a Mythology class. My students, primarily seniors, love reading these scripts! We laugh and learn together, and they always look forward to the next story. I'll be purchasing his others as well.

Four Stars
Pretty good, but didn't interest my son much. Other kids liked it though.
