Absolutely a great buy. My grandson loved the fact that the chess pieces had their own little slots to fit in. Folds up and closes nicely. The quality of the whole set is very good. The only problem with it was the packaging. It came in the original box with my address stuck to it which I couldn't remove.

It’s larger than I thought with some pleasant pseudo engraved (actually embossed) wavy lines design decorations on three quarters of the case sides. A warm, very soft wood box and wood pieces though would be nicer if it were not Balsa wood and the unfinished surface will pick up dirt over time so a varnished play surface would help here. Definitely not pine. There is, of course, nothing to stop you getting a little tin of yacht varnish and sealing the wood on the play surface. Until you do manage to get a tin of varnish, I keep the box in a plastic bag to stop itgetting dirty. It’s quite light and they’re not fragile. It’s not going to cope with a lot of knocks or play from children, children are always better with a standard club chest with weighted plastic pieces. You can get these from either Amazon or the London chess shop it comes with a rollup board. Anyhow, the box is nicely made a little late weight and in substantial and I would say the pieces are a little too small for the squares, but it’s only marginal the box on the play surface has useful coordinates around the edge. Inside the box has quadruple form filling, that is to say each side of the holiday box has a phone backing with another sheet of form in front of it that has cut outs for the chest pieces, whether you want to keep the parts and just have the pieces around inside With just one form sheet each side for speed is up to you but eventually I would save it. The form is a type that will eventually degrade. Better portable, chess set like this are made of hardwood varnished box, varnished, weighted pieces, sometimes magnetic and have felt box lining. It’s not bad. A bit insubstantial, but I’d recommend something from Jaques of London and spending a little bit more for a box and weighted pieces. And unweighted pieces are fine, but the weighted ones have a satisfying quality to play with, and you’ll know what I mean soon as you compare the feel of pieces in the hand. Is it worth the price? Well it might be inflation, I don’t know, but I don’t think so. maybe you just don’t get much for your money these days I don’t know but five or 10 years ago you’d get something like this that was much more satisfying to use and was considerably more substantial.

Bought as a present so think it is OK as they are still talking to us.

Quite suitable for my 5 year old daughter. She's definitely going to love it. The sizes are not too small so it should be easy to teach her. I would recommend to buy this.

It's a beautiful set, it's a shame they don't have a paddling under the pieces.

Good quality chess set - the pieces feel weighty and the magnets work well. It’s not too expensive, and you get a spare black and white queen. The knight has a bit of a surprised expression, but I rather like it - it's has a goofy charm to it. A solid set that feels nice to play with without being overly fancy.

the chess set doesn't feel quality, it feels very light and brittle which makes you question the materials it's constructed with, wood? plastic? the chess board when you open the set the chess pieces are arranged and inset inside a foam insert, which can be freely pulled out, underneath there is another layer of foam backing. so you can just pull both the inserts out from both sides and just throw all the chess pieces loose in the box without the inserts, giving you room to add some small draughts / checkers pieces if you wished. again the board feels incredibly light and brittle, and the surface feels coated with a cheap lacquer and feels grainy unpolished.. and while it is quite functional and visually nice, it's weight overwhelmingly suggests cheap quality, cheap material. about the chess pieces *another point that irritates me is the chess pieces have no felt or padding on the bottom, so they sound rather dry and scratchy as you move them. also their base diameter is quite narrow and having no magnetic base they can topple over easily, that said, one little bump could wipe out the entire board. and the sound the pieces make when they clang together is very high pitch making me wonder about the material used. yeah, I'm a bit scathing with this review, I expected much more for this price, find something better!

This is a nice set. Self storage is great. It makes a good gift. The pieces are nicely weighted.
