A great coming of age story with a kick ass soundtrack!
This movie came out exactly when I needed it to. I was a chubby kid my early years of high school, into everything grunge when it came to both music and fashion. I was on the outside looking in. I wanted to be popular with every fiber of my being. I wanted to fit in with the "right" crowd. Watching this movie at that time gave me the hope that I could fit in by being exactly who I was, warts and all. Plus at the time I was a HUGE Green Day fan and hearing a new song from my favorite group at the time was incredible. This a fantastic coming of age story set in the early nineties when all of us were struggling with exactly the same existential crisis that our hero Angus was dealing with. I even named my dog Angus Bethune at that time. As an adult I often go back and visit my friends Angus and Troy and reminisce about the good ole days when it was us against the world.

The story is... beefy...
Like Angus Beef. Didn't think you'd get a bad dad joke on a movie review did ya? But, really. It's a fantastic movie about being different or odd in highschool, leanring about yourself and loving yourself amongst adversity. This movie got me through some hard times, but. Good times or bad. Its a fantastic watch for all loners and weirdos. The lost or just 90s kids. You'll love it.

"I'm getting a -"
This is a great film. At times overly sweet/sentimental, but holds a charge pointing to the human struggle. This is a Warner Classics release, so it's just a professionally burned copy of the movie by Warner Bros. It doesn't have a constructed menu with images from the film. It's basic: Film, or Film Trailer. This beats "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" blu-ray with absolutely no menu whatsoever, and just keeps repeating.Angus is a wonderful film with an amazing, 90s nostalgic soundtrack (Mazzy Star et al.)

Angus review from students
For the past 5 or 6 years I have done a literature unit in one of my English classes which includes the short story "A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune" and the novel Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, both of which are by Chris Crutcher. It was not until last year did I discover the movie Angus, which is based on "A Brief Moment in the Life..." I was really excited to find something that provides such a great opportunity for compare and contrast and general analysis. This year I asked my students to write their own review of the movie. Most of them include a comparison to the short story.NOTE: I encourage anyone who has not read the short story to do so. It is interesting how a short story can be made into a full length movie.WARNING: THE FOLLOWING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. These are excepts from the reviews which were written by students in grades 10-12.4/5 stars"I would tell other people to watch it."4/5 stars"It is a pretty good movie. Not perfect, but good. They changed some big parts, and did it in a way that worked out. It's one of those cheesy high school movies that you're embarrassed to admit made you sob like your mom watching the Hallmark channel. I give his a four instead of a five because it was a good story, but very predictable."3/5 stars"I think if they would have kept the movie more like the story, if would have been better, but they did add a few things that I did like."4/5 stars "I gave this movie a four star since...it had many things about Angus at home, at school, and at the dance. I liked it when Angus kept punching Rick in the face. The thing I didn't like was that his dad died and then his grandfather died on his (the grandfather's) wedding day."3/5 stars "In my opinion this movie gets a 3 star because it cuts out Angus' four parents being homosexual. That was a major part of the story for me because that isn't very common, and I can see people using that to pick on someone. Having one parent is incredibly common. I did enjoy the addition of Troy's character."3/5 stars "I thought this movie was average because there were some confusing parts, but I would recommend this movie to a friend or family member."4/5 stars "All in all I think they did a decent job..." The movie showed more details in the subjects that were just mentioned in the short story. The movie showed more aspects in the real world than fiction like the story."4.5/5 stars "They kept very true to the story line without changing many major things. The only thing that really bugged me with this movie was the fact that they made Angus and the others freshmen instead of seniors. This, in a sense, caused the movie to seem a little bit more like a typical teenage drama when it came to the conflict between Angus and Rick instead of something more serious like if they were older."4/5 "I actually got into it and wanted to see what happened to Angus and if he actually got to go to the dance with Melissa. Even though I knew that the story had them together at the end, the movie made it so I was not sure."

What a Wonderful Little Movie - How did I miss it?
I bought this video on Prime because the opening credits has a fantastic song by Love Spit Love called "Am I Wrong" and the version in this movie is the only version with the marching band music in the background that IMO really makes the song. I had bought the CD soundtrack a while back, but I decided to give the movie a try for the first time last night. Wow, I wish I had watch it sooner. It's a funny, heart warming, and at times tear jerking coming of age movie and I really did enjoy it a lot. Give it a shot, I think you will love it.

STILL My Favorite Movie
A BEAUTIFUL movie about a fat kid whoβs good at science and fair at football.Angus, Troy, Melissa, Grandpa, Angusβ mom (KATHY BATES), you will fall in love with all of them. Also stars James Van Der Beek as the bully.Itβs SO sweet.. just, a movie from the 90βs you could not find anything like it being made today. The soundtrack is also awesome. This movie will make you LOL, it will make you cry, and you will watch it again.I never write reviews on movies, but I tell everyone in real life about this movie. Everyone Iβve watched it with loved it, too.100% worth the buy, especially at this price, $10 to own it forever on Prime π₯° (I do also have the DVD & VHS though.)Charlie Talbert (the guy that plays Angus) is on Instagram, & will even do an Angus-inspired Cameo!

My favorite movie
This is such a great movie. Kathy Bates as mom and George C. Scott as grandpa don't disappoint. Great movie that reminds you there's more to people than just superficial looks.

Everything that a Movie Should Be
I absolutely loved this movie. It is considered "old" but if you are looking for a great family movie with a happy ending and awesome moral story, this is it. It does have few scenes and language not appropriate for younger children sadly but it is a beautiful story of good guy doesn't finish last. In the age of perception is king, this movie is a great reminder that perception is NOT the truth. Highly recommend for "most ages"π
