I just purchased this sony icf-506 radio and it is constant static while in am mode. is there a solution to this?

AM reception involves a LOT of dependencies - too numerous to recount here; but, here are a few starters: COMPLETE static probably results from location, likely in a cement or steel building. Static on individual stations may be improved by rotating the radio to be perpendicular to the station transmitter location. Unlike FM, AM uses an internal ferrite-bar antenna, optimally about 8" long, usually across the top of the case (inside). Rotating the radio can make that AM ferrite-bar antenna perpendicular to the station transmitter ... for best reception. AM reception is better at night, also. Beyond this, Google AM reception ... for more thorough explanations.

How powerful is the speaker volume?

fine for bedroom or smaller den / not big volume in big room / sounds good for my purposes, which is to have it sitting near by to change channels / nice clear sound

Does this radio properly tune fm stations in the u.s.? the scale of the tuner appears to be set for japanese broadcasting.

Yes, it does properly tune FM, which is 88 to 108 mHz, which is exactly what the dial scale indicates on the radio. I think the Japanese FM band starts at 76 mHz which this radio does not cover.
