Skyhaven Harvest grows Microgreens for our weekly subscribers, farmers markets, restaurants, and grocery stores. We are a family run LLC and are environmentally and sustainably conscious powering our home and business through solar and using organic practices. We have grown with multiple soils, jute, coco coir and have concluded that these Hemp Grow Mats, made in Canada, offer the most consistent harvest and are the easiest to use. THESE HEMP GROW MATS are the grow medium we rely on for consistent results and yields. These hemp fiber grow mats are a great choice for indoor gardeners looking to grow nutritious microgreens, wheat grass, and other short term crops. No dirt means these are a clean and sustainable growing medium for your home. Each sheet of hemp is pre cut to fit a standard 10” x 20” growing tray.

good quality grow mats
I used these mats for my first attempt at sprouting microgreens. I first looked at jute mats and noticed a lot of people were complaining of a chemical smell coming from the mats. I didn’t want to take a chance on them and looked at other alternatives. I discovered these 100% hemp mats that are made in the USA by a small company and am very pleased with them. They are basically odor free, with just the lightest grassy scent – no chemical odor. I am using 7” x 5” glass containers for my sprouts. I cut these in half to get two 5-inch pieces and then trim to 7 inches and they fit perfectly.

But at what cost?
Works decent for smaller seeds in the cheap 10x20 trays. Not very cost effective, but does the job well.

Work very well for growing.
The hemp mats are used to grow micro greens. They work very well. A plus is they can be composted after use.

Wonderful for growing clean microgreens
I tried a couple of different methods for growing microgreens - I don't like using actual soil as that can introduce the dirt/grit factor to cutting the greens. I used a supposedly made for kit that had a plastic screen at the bottom, held up about a quarter of an inch about the bottom where you pour water and then cover the whole thing over like a seed starting kit, but the softened seeds, while sprouting, also seem to keep their hard shell as often as not, on the first leaves that open when sprouting. With this mat, the seeds seem to settle better and the hard outer shell is "discarded" as it should be leaving the sprouts to stand up and grow green and healthy as they should. I am growing lettuce hydroponically inside and these microgreens add a touch of "instant" freshness to a fresh bowl of lettuce grown in my kitchen! Right now, the way things are going with COVID and other factors, having fresh food I produce in my yard or house is worth it. And I love being able to grow sprouts on these mats - will be buying more as I go through the microgreens I have growing now.
