Digitally remastered edition of Rufus & Chaka Khan Live - Stompin’ At The Savoy with exclusive interviews with band members. Rufus were one of Funk’s most successful American bands in the 1970’s. Chaka Khan joined the group in 1973. Lead vocal duties in the group were shared by Chaka and Tony Maiden though the powerhouse vocals of the former quickly came to redefine the band. By 1981, Chaka had framed herself with a strong run of post-disco soul records and exited Rufus. However, from February 12-14 1982, Chaka rejoined the band for what would be their final performances together at New York’s famed Savoy Theatre. Recordings from these performances were later mastered and packaged as a double live LP, Rufus & Chaka Khan Live - Stompin’ At The Savoy (R&B #4/Pop #50/UK #64). The results amount to some of the most amazing work the group ever committed to record. The album also included four new studio recordings. ‘Ain’t Nobody’ (R&B #1/Pop #22/UK #8) became an instant classic and is undoubtedly Rufus & Chaka Khan at their richest, with the emerging electro-funk of the era laying the groundwork for Chaka’s sensuous vocals. The Jeffrey Osborne co-penned “One Million Kisses” (R&B #37/UK #86) remains one of the band’s more wistful and soulful selections in their latter-day period whilst “Try a Little Understanding” features a wonderfully playful bind between Chaka and Tony’s vocals. Their spine tingling reading of the Jazz standard “Don’t Go To Strangers” was recorded live in the studio with an orchestra and features a stirring vocal by Chaka.

An excellent recording
This is a terrific record of an excellent band. It is highly representative of what their performances were like. I travelled as stage manager with Chaka and her post-Rufus band (with Tony Maiden on guitar, though), and heard her perform these tunes night after night. I never tired of it then, and I haven't tired of this recording. R & B like it should be.

A nice way for Rufus to end their run!!
As any Chaka Khan fan knows by now, she ended her association with the legendary funk group after the completion of this album, which also included her smash, "Ain't Nobody," which was the highlight of the album. This album showcases why the group was so talented, and by having a good chunk of their greatest hits sung live, they went out in style.

Searchin' for Stompin'
I have been looking for the CD version of this album for years. I love it. Chaka Khan's voice is superb! I do wish I had bought the CD itself because I would love to know who the backup singers were on this production.

A brilliant album I can't stop playing!
I haven't listened to this for years as my copy is vinyl. Saw this on CD and had to buy it. I haven't stopped listening to it since it arrived. This is Rufus at their funkiest and Chaka Khan at her best. This is a live recording, but you'd think it was done in a studio, the sound is so clear. They play all their greatest hits and it is a joy to listen to these classics again. If you want something that is going to put a spring in your step, then buy this album!

Rufus & Chaka kicking it big time!!
I bought this album on release in its original format but time and light fingers have seen to it that I no longer have the vinyl so I was very pleased to obtain this cd. It’s an excellent set of live recordings plus some studio tracks including Chaka’s gorgeous rendition of Don’t go to Strangers. I’d say it’s a must-have for all discerning music lovers.

Great album
A live recording from the early 80s which showcases the band and Chaka at the peak of their powers. Excellent from start to finish. The studio tracks include Ain't Nobody which is itself an 80s classic. Great stuff!
