Great Improvement!!! A Game that understands what a video game racing fan wants.
I was one of those guys who owned GRID (The first one) and loved it. It had the damage we craved that separated it from Forza and Gran Turismo. Then we waited forever until Grid 2 came out so we could get an updated and hopefully better version of the first game. Sadly this was a flop and only appealed to drift fans. Now Codemasters have redeemed themselves with Grid Autosport. This is NOT Grid or Grid 2 people! This is the perfect blend that toes the line between Simulation and Arcade extremely well.Differences:- Great presentation: From the opening menu to the graphics to the paddock menu during the race weekend this game has made a jump to act more like other big racing titles. It feels more professional, with easily negotiable options and a breakdown of car stats before races, a breakdown of options during a race weekend, and pretty good graphics for not being on a PS4.- Career: You now have 5 separate divisions of racing (Touring, Endurance, Street, Tuner, and Open Wheel) plus the upper level Grid Challenge. Instead of racing for other teams until you earn enough for a Mustang (ala Grid 1) you now choose a team to race for that will tell you the XP bonus for completing challenges and which car you want, but you do have to race well to unlock better deals.- Racing: The cars have a much more realistic feel. In Grid you have way more control during slides than in Autosport. In Autosport you have to drive the cars seriously. The rwd BMW Touring cars for example will get the best of you if you think that drifting is the best thing to do in them. As stated above you now have a paddock menu when you enter a race season. Here you get to either jump into the race (and start last...), qualify for a few laps with no restarts, practice for 10 minutes (you can enter and exit this as you wish to work on your car), and tune your car depending on how good your team is (some have minimal tuning available, others have medium, later you might get high levels of tuning). You can also control your teammates aggression level with the LB/RB or L1/R1 buttons on a console controller while getting feedback from your crew chief using the directional buttons.PROS:- Authentic racing presentation- More realistic handling (You have to calculating instead of driving as aggressive as possible)- Wide range of difficulty settings (Im on Very Hard and man is it a pain, but its challenging)- Tuning- Season layout is well done giving you the keys to start where you want while giving you plenty of cars to go through.- More tracks (Abu Dabai, Hockenheim, Sepang, Circuit of the Americas, etc).- Lots of rubbing between AI- Split Screen action and options (keeps track of which player wins the most events in one session regardless if you pick one race or a playlist it will keep the numbers updated until you leave the game mode).CONS:- Cannot turn of penalty for going over white lines (Needs to be turned down, there is a big difference between cutting the track and me making a small mistake and going over the lines barely)- AI ramming you off the track causing you to get penalties (What frustrates me most right now)- AI having no clue how to take a corner when you are inside of them (They will turn into the apex regardless if you are there or not, this will cause the game to think you cut a corner if they shove you below the lines...)I have had this game for a day and it is fantastic. It has improved so much and it is great that Codemasters realized their mistakes from GRID 2 and went back to the game's roots. If I could turn off the penalties for cutting the track (or if they are made more lenient through updates) this would be my favorite racing game in a long time. It is a blast whether you race demo derby cars, hot hatches, touring cars, open wheel, endurance... you get the point. I can't believe I got this for $33 practically right after it came out.

Time to Get Rid of Grid
Well, the good news is this new Grid is MUCH better than Grid 2, which was a total abomination with horrible car handling problems. The bad news is IMO this game is nowhere as much fun as the original Grid, which I really enjoyed. The big problem here is the lack of an exterior view as you're racing. Did the first Grid have this problem? I don't think so, or if it did, it didn't cause me the headaches I'm getting as I'm trying to play this turkey. You're forced here to choose between one of two very constricted interior views that make it very difficult to see the turns in the road ahead. And if you activate the tracking guide, which puts a colored line on the road showing your optimum path and warning you of excessive speed, driving still is impossible, because the colors are light green, orange, and red pastels that make the line hard to see.Combine this with very aggressive driving from your computer opponents at the normal difficulty level, and this becomes much more an exercise in frustration than a fun day at the races. The only feedback I get from my male team captain is, "Let's just try to make it across the finish line," while the female voice advises me to consider lowering the level of difficulty at the end of every season.Folks, I've been playing racing games for decades now, and when I'm finding a game this annoying at the normal level, something is very wrong with the game.I'll let others describe the various modes and whatnot. Someone else said this may be the best racing game now available on the PS3, but to my way of thinking that's not praise for the game, it's a statement about the sorry state of racing games currently available for the PS3. (Yes, I'm talking to you, Gran Turismo!)So I guess it's time to revisit Need for Speed Most Wanted or Burnout Paradise. Those games aren't as realistic as this one, but at least they're both major fun to play...

Good, better than GT6
My previous experience with a contemporary racing simulation was with GT5 and GT6. While overall the physics in Grid Autosport aren't quite as realistic, in a couple of ways they are better (e.g. skid simulation). What is significantly better in Grid Autosport is the AI. In Gran Turismo the AI presents rolling obstructions with little simulation of racing competitors. Grid's AI is, for the most part, quite good, offering a much better racing simulation than Gran Turismo. The Grid AI isn't perfect, sometimes exhibiting excessive and unrealistic agressiveness with regard to collisions.Grid's interface is also not up to the level of Gran Turismo. It's perfectly functional, just not as flexible. Finally, Grid's online, multi-player racing is better than Gran Turismo. Grid allows a much more limited selection of vehicles that can be used in a specific online race, but this provides notably closer competition in the racing.
