Q: What are the interior dimensions?

The inside dimensions are 3/4 inch width x 1.25 inch length x just under 1/2 inch depth. A quarter will not lie flat though the lid will close on it to hide.

Q: Do the chests snap closed so that items will not fall out of them?

The chests do "snap" closed but only in the sense that the edges meet and close--there is no additional clasp. I was able to place a small wrapped candy like Hersey's kiss or a coin in each to simulate treasure and the chests did stay closed until the kids found them. I did not have the problem of the coins falling out. Best wishes.
