Digital Photography: A Basic Manual

Easy to understand but structured poorly
We use this as a textbook in my photography class. The book isn't structured very well and the author tends to repeat himself, but it is very concise and isn't hard to read.

Read this Book and turn off Auto exposure forever- P is not for Professional!
I have a BFA in Photography from SCAD, and I've been an active photographer for more than 15 years. Recently a good friend of mine asked me to teach her about photography and create a photo curriculum for her self study. Henry Horenstein authored many of the books I referenced when I took intro classes many years ago, so I was very happy to find this contemporary intro level text geared toward digital photography. The book covers the basic intro level information that one would expect- lens focal length, aperture, depth of field, shutter speed, equivalent exposure, basic lighting principles, ect. The book omits film and darkroom techniques, instead focusing on info relevant to digital photography- custom functions of the digital SLR, uploading and file management, editing, printing, ect.As with Horenstein's other books, the content was clearly written and easy to understand. If you are brand new to photography and are looking for a good overall manual that will teach you how to use your digital SLR and how to get out of the "P for Professional" mentality, then this book is for you.

Great "Tool" Book: Digital Camera
If you have a digital camera and want more from it then the regular settings consider this book. Took a digital camera class on line through an Adult College Class. The class was great but this book enforced my learning experience. Took great notes until you review on your own...book was a big help! Bought used and was just as happy with it.

Great starting point for your digital photography library!
This book is exactly what I was looking for. If you are a neophyte to photography, I would recommend starting with this book as a foundation builder for your knowledge base of all things digital.

All the basics
The book has all the basics. It's a bit tedious going through what you already know to eventually arrive at stuff that's new. But it's fine.

very usefull for a beginner
The instruction manual for a new camera is sometimes difficult to unsderstand because a beginner does not understand the basics: aperture, shutter, lighting, exposure... This book explains the basics about everything a beginner needs to know. After reading this book you will be able to set your camera to something else than AUTO and obtain better pictures.
