Sony's Disposible Boombox
More imported junk. Cassette player lasted 8 months before it started eating tapes. Now the cassette player is unusable, it drags on the tapes. The other features (CD, AM/FM) seem okay, they haven't been used much. More disposable junk from China with the Sony name on it. Update: 02-24-17 Sony CFDS70BLK CD/Cassette Boombox Home Audio Radio, Black: I bought this as a gift for a blind person. Prior to this he used a Radio Shack Cassette Player/Recorder for over 30 years, ~two hours a day until it died. He takes care of his stuff. This unit was purchased primarily for the Cassette Player/Recorder feature; his library is mostly cassette. Slight initial confusion to play tape on this unit, the cassette play button symbol appears backward to him and me however, this does not detract from the unit. He was thrilled by the great sound quality from all the features of the unit - AM/FM, Cassette Player/Recorder, CD Player. He bragged how much he enjoyed this unit, and is grateful to have something he needs. After eight months of slight use the Cassette Player/Recorder is useless but the radio and CD player continue to work, they both have excellent quality sound. When we were shopping for a Cassette Player I recommended Sony without hesitation; I associate Sony with quality and to large degree I still do. He and I both are very frustrated with Sony’s letdown in quality. This unit is very well designed electronically; it sounds great but suffers from terribly inferior mechanical components associated with disposable products. Without further risk of humility I will refrain from being so quick to recommend Sony and some of their consumer products for any value and longevity. I do not recommend this unit to anyone. Update: 11-11-17 Sony CFDS70BLK CD/Cassette Boombox Home Audio Radio, Black: Sony customer service made good for my friend. During the one year factory warranty period, Sony provided a cost free replacement of the defective cassette player. He is equally impressed with the sound quality of the new unit though he’s now reluctant to use it much. Jeannette was helpful with her timely reply to my post. Sony’s customer service was eager to uphold the company name and professional during the return process. Customer satisfaction? Sony makes some great stuff and proved to stand behind its product. I own several Sony’s, confident they will perform when used. Things wear out from normal use but for sixty bucks plus tax for a dependable music source for 8 months use is certainly not my expectation of value. It was a hassle to him to rely on others to help with tech support to troubleshoot, find the box, all accessories, pack, label, and ship the defective product. Label alone was 4 emails and label delivery. Using inferior components in this product tarnished Sony’s reputation for quality. Update 09-08-22: The replacement unit is still working fine after 5 years. I raised the Star Rating from 1 to 5.

I Like It
It is good to see that cassette players are still available. I bought specifically because this may not be the case for much longer The engineering and design of this player seems quite good. Excellent FM reception. The antenna did not seem flimsy to me as someone else noted. I play a cassette with no issues; FF, Rewind, and Play all functioned well. It seems like a very decent cassette player. A played a standard CD (Sibelius Finlandia) and it sounded very good. Sony makes nice sounding units. The first MP3 disk I tried could not be read, but I suspect that is because of the sampling rate that I used for the files. Standard mp3 files should work with no issues. The manual also describes the folder format required to play these files. Please leave a followup comment if you have successfully tried playing mp3 files. The plastic housing does feel cheap but it is finished well and looks good. The boombox is also very light which could be a benefit for some. For the price, this is a respectable radio that has Sony's experience and reputation behind it.

Disappointing tape functionality, but happy overall.
Overall, this is about what I expected. The included features definitely seem like things that most people might look for in a radio like this. I do think, for something that was clearly designed on a budget, the price might be a little high. The digital features are pretty nice, but hardly cost anything to be included. The "analog" features, in the other hand, are all a bit flimsy. The good- -It is quite lightweight without batteries, which may or may not mean anything. -The sound quality is good enough. Though, even with Sony's proprietary Mega Bass, it doesn't sound quite as rich as many Bluetooth speakers, like my Roker Sound Box. -I'm very happy it includes an auxiliary audio-in. Though I don't necessarily need it, maybe some day there will be an all-in-one Sony cd radio cassette with audio-in AND Bluetooth. -The CD functions exactly how it should. The play-modes like shuffle, repeat, and even program all seem to work as expected. -It's nice that the radio is digitally tuned with a few preset and favorite buttons to boot, though HD radio would have been pretty nice, even if it cost more. -The antenna is nice and long, though reception seems about average. I deducted one star for a few features that wouldn't have cost much more for them to include. A lot about this stereo is quite basic, with the cassette tape player being the worst offender. -Firstly, I would have gladly paid $10 or more a if this had a remote control, like my old Sony CFD-V25 did. -The tape door is flimsy and I'm almost surprised it isn't entirely manual like the old Walkmans. -The CD door is also a bit flimsy and actually is completely manual. -There is no auto-stop function on the tape's rewind or fast forward buttons. -There is no counter or any way of monitoring the progress of the tape, which is something that's a bit important as a tape recorder. It might not have looked as sleek, but they could have at least had a window in the tape door. -Worst in my book is No Dolby NR, No CrO2/Metal selection and No Auto-Reverse. I mean even the Sony walkman had those features. It is 2016. Nobody uses MP3 CDs now, but it needs its own file browser. The tape deck couldn't get Dolby? I would be much more happy if, as one of the last tape players to be manufactured, it was as fully functioning as they were 20 years ago. All that being said, I would buy it again. I guess you can't have everything.

Compared with the earlier Sony CFDS05
Based on how much I liked the previous model, Sony CFDS05 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox Speaker System (Discontinued by Manufacturer) , I ordered this for a friend who wanted a CD player for her son. While it was in my possession, I tested it out and compared it with the previous model. I have included a picture of both models together, and the first thing you may notice is that the new model is smaller. As a frame of reference, a 14.1 inch Dell E6410 laptop lies between them. I normally use this as an audio source, and it sits comfortably on the older model. The newer model has a noticeably smaller footprint, and a laptop cannot be placed on it, because the cassette buttons jut upward from the surface, and the top slants a bit. If you place a silicone trivet ( MIU France Set of 2 Silicone Pot Holders, Red ) on top, you could place a smaller audio source on it, such as a tablet, phone, or MP3 player. Another thing you may notice from the photograph is that the buttons of the earlier model are clearly set on the front. The buttons on the newer model cannot be seen in the photo, because they are on the top. This would be inconvenient for me, because I normally use my kitchen stereo to play music from my laptop. You can see the newer model's buttons in the stock images. These are black against a black surface, which doesn't stand out as well as the light grey buttons on the dark grey background of the older model. Aside from the tape buttons, all the buttons on the newer model are circles of about the same size, which makes it even harder to distinguish them. In contrast, the older model has buttons in different shapes and sizes, which makes it easier to tell them apart. Also, the buttons on the older model are well-organized, with related buttons being grouped together, whereas the buttons on the newer model are not as well organized. For example, the FM/AM button and the Audio In button, which both affect the audio source, are on opposite sides. Whereas in the older model, four buttons for audio source are grouped together front and center. However, the newer model does have the advantage of being a bit more intuitive in how its buttons function. While the older model has four buttons for selecting between Tape, CD, Radio, and Audio In, the newer model omits the first two. Instead, when you press the play button for the tape or CD, it will start to play a tape or CD, even if it was previously set to radio or audio in. I did not check whether this keeps it from recording the radio or an external audio source, since I no longer tape record the radio anyway. When I first listened to the newer model, it did not sound nearly as good as the older model. But this was partly due to placement. I had it in the middle of the kitchen instead of against a wall. When I placed it on top of the older one, as seen in the picture, its sound improved. The older model generally has excellent sound, at least for a kitchen stereo. I have some better stereo equipment, but it is fixed in other rooms. In comparing the sound of the newer model with the older model, the best it ever did was to sound comparable to the older model. It never sounded better, and it sometimes sounded worse. The speakers inside might be the same size, but the older one has a larger grill that extends around the front of the stereo, while the newer one uses the front space in the middle for the tape deck. This may give better acoustics to the older model. Overall, I prefer the older model for its better sound, its large flat top that can accommodate a laptop, and its easy to read buttons on the front. But the newer model does have some features that would give it an edge as a bedside stereo. Its sleep button will signal it to turn off in 90 minutes, and you can adjust this time downward by pressing it again. This is useful if you want to play the radio while going to sleep without it playing all night. It also has a headphone port, which will let you listen to it without bothering someone else. This is not an important feature in a kitchen stereo, which I play while walking around and working. One more new feature of the newer model is its ability to play CDs with MP3s on them. I did burn some MP3s to CDs and try this out, and it worked fine. But for my own purposes, it is easier to plug my MP3 player into the stereo's audio in port and listen to my MP3s that way. So it's not an important feature for me. One last thing to mention is that this does not come with a cord for connecting an external audio source. The older model did come with a cord for this, and you can see it connecting the laptop to the newer model in the picture. So, if you do plan to use it with an external audio source, this will be an added expense.

great for my use
i don't know if i would call this a boombox compared to others i have had which were large, loud, and gaudy looking. I would call it a nice desktop radio/cd/cassette player, so it is actually a great fit for my use. I was looking for a portable speaker with a Aux IN port and with a digital AM/FM radio and this is perfect for what i wanted. i will probably never use the cassette player or the cd player, but it is small and light enough so that it doesn't matter. it is easy to carry to another room and listen to my iPad or smart phone with the Aux port at a louder volume than these devices normally provide. I should add that the saving of the radio stations to the memory is a chore, but it is worth it to me to do it once and have it set up, rather than fiddling with an analog tuning knob and not being sure of what station is tuned in.

The old one has a very nice sound and is very durable
This has such a wimpy sound. I can't believe it. I spent $50 on this and expected so much more. We purchased a Sony boombox 13 years ago, and the difference is unbelievable. The old one has a very nice sound and is very durable. It is heavy and has stood up to several moves and four children. As a result, it has several dents in it, but it's still going strong. But this new one is so small and lightweight that I feel like it could break if I breathe on it. I purchased this to replace our old one, because it seemed the old one was broken. It turns out that it was just the power cord that had gone out. So, I was able to compare the sounds of both. This new one has such a wimpy sound. You can hear a constant "whirr" underneath the sound. Then the sound of the music is just small and bad. Turning up the volume doesn't help the sound; rather, it just produces a loud bad sound. Turning the "mega bass" on or off doesn't help either. At first I thought I was imagining things, because I really was looking forward to this stereo and I expected it to sound as good as the old one. So I tried several different CDs to make sure I wasn't being too critical. Then I put the same CDs into the old one, and wow, what a difference. It has such a clear, big sound! Whether you turn the volume up or down or the "mega bass" on or off, it's a very good sound. I'm sending this new one back right away for a refund. I can't believe how junky things are nowadays. For $50, Sony should be able to make a decent CD player. Just unbelievable. We will be keeping the old boombox, and we'll simply buy a new power cord for it.

Great player to enjoy your old cassettes and CDs!
I bought this Sony CFD-S70 Stereo CD Boombox for my mom who wanted a CD player for when she volunteers at church. It's very easy to use, has AM/FM radio, cassette player, and CD player. I've tested all three and the sound quality is great! There's also a headphone jack and an MP3 port, but I haven't tested those since she won't be using them. It's a Sony product, so quality was expected and it did not disappoint! We got used to playing CDs on it, so we decided to keep the first one and order another so that she doesn't have to keep bringing it back and forth (home to church, church to home). I had forgotten how fun it is to listen to CDs, not having to rely on a laptop or cellphone to play my tunes. I love that it's pretty compact for what it does. I have an old CD/cassette player lying around the house, that I've misplaced the cord for, the thing is massive compared to the Sony CD player. It has the option of batteries, and comes with a power cord. Great purchase, compact with great sound! Would definitely recommend this!
