Black does come off.
This was a "promise" kind accessory for me and my GF and we wear them like promise rings/necklaces. They are great to wear and aren't strangling like some other necklaces we've tried on. The only issue is that the black on the big bear does eventually come off and becomes silver like the smaller bear but it's not too much of an issue as it doesn't really lose any functionality or value. 9/10
