Mal cortado

Such a simple and beautiful read :)
(Translated from Japanese by Stephen Snyder)“How exactly does a man live with only eighty minutes of memory?” asks the cover page of the book.It is a beautifully calm novella that follows the story of a Professor of mathematics who suffers from a type of amnesia wherein he remembers everything from his past but his current memory now only lasts for eighty minutes. He wakes up with no memory of what happened the day before and always has small notes on him, tucked to his coat which are his reminders to his present. The story is narrated by a young, very practical housekeeper who takes care of the Professor and has a ten-year-old son ‘Root’. Root because the shape of his head is flat like the square root, the Professor gave him this name.It follows the friendships that form between the three of them. The story revolves around numbers. All types of numbers, prime, real, natural, integers, amicable, perfect, triangular and what not. Professor’s whole life was about numbers and to him, they bought comfort and joy. Solving theorems and mathematical puzzles for journals was his favourite thing to do.I am not a great fan of mathematics but as the story unfolds I discovered the Professor’s love for mathematics and learnt how beautiful the numbers can be.“I had no idea a proof could be beautiful… or ugly.”“Of course it can.”Yoko Ogawa has so beautifully written this story with such level of understanding and elegance that it is very commendable. The way she has portrayed the character of the Professor and his love for numbers and how he imparts his knowledge to the housekeeper and her son. The relationship between the professor and Root was so innocent and cute that it bought tears in my eyes for a few moments. The Housekeeper’s character was so brilliantly written. We see her in the best & worst moments of life, but she never lost hope and she deeply cared about the people she loved. This is a heartfelt beautiful tale of friendship, love, basketball, mathematics and moments to cherish in life. I was very charmed by this book and how every word of the book showed kindness and care.
