Does the unit come with a plug type cord or does it have to be hard wired?

I hard wired a 14 GA. 3 wire 10'-12' extension cord that I removed the female end from. Works traffic. Shorter the better.

what is it made of? any metal?

The black rings are plastic. The fan blades and motor are metal.

Can a variable speed control be attached instead of a thermostat. What type of electric motor is it? Is it capacitive start.

I'm not sure of the of the type of motor it is. My motor is still running well, and it runs well with the thermo. I broke the AC to the motor, so that I can shut the fan down for the winter or another type of situation. I would guess that it might be a capacitive start, and over time with a speed control????

do you have covers for 16'' round

I have an outside vent cover on the main vent. I installed a second unit under a turbine vent. It comes on if the attic temp-continues to rise. I may have to turbo-vent changed out to a standard vent. In the mean time, I keep the turbo bearings lubed. Don J
