So soft
This is my second set of pastels, they perform so well from blending to how well the color will stick to the paper. Be gentle with them… I already snapped two and I thought I had a more gentle hand.

If you want to try learn soft pastels buy these and grow from there!
One of the toughest decisions in getting started in soft pastels is you must make a choice in what set to buy to get started to even see if this medium is right for you. I'm still in my first year, but as I gain the opportunity to try lots of different kinds of pastels and how unique they all are I keep coming back to this set.1. They are clean, compared to most soft pastels, they make very little dust. There's still dust and dusty fingertips, but their hardness is helpful at first and is less off-putting to people who don't much like to make a mess with their art. (that's not me!)2. They are small. They allow you to easily make very small marks, something most people used to sketching will miss this with the size of regular soft pastels. You can hold them, and sharpen them like a crayon if you wish, making them feel more familiar to artists from other mediums.3. Because the rule with pastels is you must put your softer pastel marks on top of your harder pastel marks these make excellent sticks for making your underpaintings and backgrounds.4. If you watch YouTube pastel painting tutorials you will find that almost all of these artists have a set of these - proving they remain useful even to the professionals.5. These are the least expensive per stick for such a high quality color selection of any set. I have tried many of the lower cost sets and some I have given away to children, but not these, ever.6. They can create sharp dense lines, soft smooth strokes, they blend nicely together, the colors are lovely if a bit overly vibrant, I am always tempted to use their ability to create tiny marks to create my final highlights on paintings, but they are not best for this as they just don't lay down well on top of other softer pastels.7. You can use alcohol or even water to wet them and use them like watercolors. There, you just saved yourself 100% of the price because now you don't need to buy Caran D'ache.

Not Chalky, Smooth, Nice Color
I have been participating in vote-based art contests on Facebook. I noticed that they tended to cycle through art media when I went and looked back. The first one I participated in was any medium (I used colored pencil), the next one was ink (I had some Pigma Micron pens around, luckily). The other two things they have used in contests so far were pastel and watercolor. This put me in a quandary. I asked a few other art friends if they had used some of the less expensive pastels, and no one I asked had, and one person suggested these. A few days later, Amazon notified me of a flash deal where they were a very good price. I would have liked to have a larger set to start off with (24 is better than 12 though), but am hoping I have enough to be able to create something for the next contest. Experiments with Conte crayon and Prussian blue allowed me to do a pretty good eye study.I haven't used pastels in more than 30 years, and the ones I had were chalk pastels, student grade bought for a kid in one of those Christmas artists sets. Touching pastel like that makes me cringe - the chalky sensation of it. These pastels are NOT quite like PrismaColor Premier ArtSticks - if anything, these are a little creamier. There is a little bit of dust that comes off when you stroke them across the paper, but not crumbly, etc.I was surprised to see instructions saying to use them with water. I can't wait to play with these a little more, and even maybe venture more into mixed media (I started out planning to learn colored pencil painting very well; the thing I used most when I used to create visual art was heavy-body acrylic paint with modifiers, etc.).

The black is nice and dark.
Hello fellow pastel users, I bought this set primarily for the black. As you know, a dark value in black makes your artwork have depth and a full range of values. I'm happy with it's darkeness. I have used the other colors too. They are not chalky. They do not break easily. I like their sharp edge for detail work. I have had the pastels long enough to complete one very detailed drawing. I think a beginner would like these pastels. I'm no expert, but they do not seem to be a 'student grade'/ less quality than other pastels. The box has foam between each stick, which is nice for keeping them safe and clean. I will probably buy this set again when needed.

Expensive, not so great packaging, overall a pretty good product.
Overall I'm fairly happy with my purchase. I'm frustrated however that the packaging didn't contain bubble wrap and some of my very expensive pastels are damaged. One appears defective and it really makes me question the authenticity of this product. For a hundred dollars, more caution should be used in ensuring the product gets to me undamaged. Thank goodness only 3 were damaged. I'll update with more pictures and information after I've had a chance to use them. So far though, I'm not too impressed. After a bit of use over the last few weeks, here's what I've observed. The color is pretty rich and they're easy to work with. They break waaaayyyy too easily and the foam lining they're surrounded by comes up easily allowing them to slide out of place. I haven't found a remedy for this yet.Overall pretty on par with prismacolor products and I can appreciate it as an art person.Color selection is pretty good except for oranges.I'd purchase them again.
