The New Pageants for Piano, Introductory Book 1

Atypical pieces; Good for motivated student
I have used this book for years with everyone from Kindergarteners through older adults. It is, of course designed primarily for children, but lessons progress fairly quickly, adding musical elements with nearly every piece. In my experience, some children might require additional supplemental material (I like to use "Fingerpower"-type exercises, and also work with simple improvisations over a limited range of notes). Young children seem to like the simple illustrations, which are not too busy and distracting, as is the case with certain more recent piano methods. Most importantly, the book is written by a true composer, Donald Waxman, who uses simple but somewhat unusual modes and phrase structures. This is far more interesting than the typical tonic-dominant-tonic fare of most piano methods. Book 2 and 3 of the series continue along the same lines, and feature even more interesting compositions.

Great beginner book (esp for boys because the pictures are unique and quirky and not cutesy)

Perfect for beginners...
A perfect book to begin with, having the young student use note names and beats. The children loved the pictures, often coloring them and they loved the practice of these pieces. My 6 year old grandson even made up words to go with the pieces.

Delightful illustrations, excellent simple pieces
Wonderfully funny drawings on every page. Simple-yet-expressive little musical pieces, excellent way for a child to discover how to tell a story / express feeling with just a few notes. Great gift for a young pianist.
