Always Another Country

Extremely well written, realistic, and captivating
I heard Sisonke Msimang speaking on television, or reading an excerpt of her book somewhere, I don't know. Anyway, I'm a South African, and an immigrant. Though Sisonke and I aren't of the same race (an inescapable issue in a country that is still plagued by the aftershock of Apartheid and intense internal division), Sisonke's autobiography spoke to me. I cried often, but as much of love as of pain. It is intensely relatable as an immigrant to Canada, and as a South African. It is beautifully written, funny, deep, and moving. She has written something wonderful and I recommend anyone to read it who wishes to better understand South Africa, the influence of decolonization on African spaces, and the immigration experience. She charts it in a lively and captivating way. I felt I could hear her voice when I read, or the voice of the people about whom she wrote. I felt I had met people like her, or like her parents, in my own life. Thank-you for this book.

Brilliant
Brilliant. Read like a novel. I could not put it down. Read it within 2 days of receiving. It was story telling at its purest. An old soul in a young body telling a story.I could feel and identify with her personal dilemmas . She was able to be brutally honest and it made me feel uncomfortable as those were the same demons I had wrestled with in the past. Those demons never leave. This book is about "home", which will apply to any ex-pat who struggles with these same issues wherever they may be if they have any semblance of a conscience. It will be applicable to anyone that has had to flee oppression in all its disguises.

Sisonke's Memoir Touched My Heart
Sisonke Msimang's memoir Always Another Country is deeply personal journey through her life as a nomad with a deep attachment to the dream of free South Africa. She grew in Zambia, Kenya, Canada and share her cross-cultural experiences that shaped her heart and her passion for justice. As she becomes a professional, she returns to South Africa as wrestles with finding love, building a family, and serving justice for all South Africans. I highly recommend that you share Sisonke's journey, as it sparked memories from my past that helped me reflect on my own journey and to become a better person.
