The bottom is flimsy and very narrow. I couldn’t put something in it and have it stay in place. It’s sitting in my closet and I’ll probably never use it. Hope this helps.

I don't have any experience on NYC sidewalks carrying a backpack, but the wheels are very sturdy for my use in Virginia.

Q: Does this work on stairs?

Yes, this cart is lightweight but heavy duty. I have rolled it up and down a set of 14 steps a dozen times. You may want to purchase a couple more bungee cords to secure your items.
