Beautiful description of Muslim family in Spain starting 1492
This is a beautiful story of a Muslim family in Spain after the Moors surrendered to the Catholic monarchs in 1492. The Jews were kicked out, had to convert or be killed in 1492. Muslims were allowed to stay. But shortly afterward the Catholic priests burned all the books written in Arabic, and by 1501 all Muslims had to convert. The Inquisition started torturing and killing converted Muslims and Jews alike (although the book only talks about the Muslims). But her writing is superb and she has created deep characters that run the gamut of possible responses to such a difficult situation. The author is a prize winning writer trained in the US.

Part one of a Trilogy
Unfortunately. It is a well written novel about how Muslims in Spain were impacted by the Spanish Inquisition. Unfortunately, it appears the sequels are not translated from Arabic. I understand the Arabic version has all 3 parts. It gives some insights into the Islam culture of the 1500s.
