For older pets, we recommend using this bed as a top layer to an orthopaedic bed, so they get to enjoy the comfort of this one.Why didn't we just make it thicker? We tested and found that for this design type to be machine washable, a thick filling for the center tends to get lumpy after short use despite stitching to help keep everything in place. More expensive memory foam type models typically have less soft removable covers that can be separately washed so the foam doesn't get damaged.
