Opera (Oxford Classical Texts) (Latin Edition)

Conte's Teubner text costs three and a half times as much as Mynors' Oxford text. Moreover, the Teubner has only the Aeneid, but the Oxford text has the Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend the Teubner for the Aeneid, for three reasons.The first reason is that the Teubner has a genuine sewn binding. As was pointed out by reviewer Alptekin Sanli, the Oxford text consists of a hard cover over the binding of a cheap paperback. I had to keep on scotch-taping pages of it to the binding until I gave up. (I have to scotch-tape even my four Oxford texts of Homer, which are shorter than the Oxford Vergil.)The second reason is that because Mynors text preceded Conte's, Conte made use of it.The third reason is that Conte's apparatus criticus is much fuller than Mynors'. Conte provides explanations for the readings he chose and includes, for example, Servius' and DServius' readings on disputed passages. Mynors does neither.

Some of the rather expensive volumes on this series (Oxford Classical Texts), including the Virgil, merely have the *appearance* of being hard-bound, when in fact they consist of pages *glued* to a stiff spine (which method is known as 'perfect binding', and is the preferred method for cheaper paperbacks), and then, fitted with cardboard covers.A hard*bound* book, as it rests on your desk, is supposed to stay *open* on a page; whereas a 'perfect bound' paperback shuts itself when there is no weight holding the pages.These editions are valuable primarily in that they are authoritative scholarly editions; nevertheless, reliable editions of the same texts are obtainable free of charge at the Perseus Project (often much earlier Oxford editions themselves). The other reason why someone might want to buy such expensive hardcopies is that he or she wants to have the book laid open, for reference, comparison, etc. etc., on a desk alongside other books, a computer, and the rest of the usual clutter--and thus, these 'fake' hardcovers are seriously frustrating.

Our son is in his sixth year of Latin, and he loves this whole series of books. This is his fourth or fifth book from the series and his second copy of this one (he loaned out the first copy).

Before you purchase this or any other OCT, consider carefully whether you expect to need commentary or a teacher's assistance. For Vergil, if either of these is the case, Pharr's reasonably priced Aeneid 1-6 may be ideal--or at least more appropriate than the bare Latin text with notes on the manuscript tradition, which is all you will find in oxford's edition. Pharr's ample gloss and commentary make his Aeneid the best text for beginning/intermediate students of latin. For other Virgil texts, there are innumerable student editions of varying quality. Instead of wading through these, find a professor of the classics or a teacher of classical languages who will wouldn't mind offering his/her guidance.

When looking at  Opera (Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Oxoniensis Latin Edition) , it offers an alternative "paperback format", which takes you to this item. While the aforementioned hardcover is correctly labeled, this book contains not the works of Publius Vergilius Maro (the author of the Aeneid), but rather Virgilius Maro Grammaticus (a.k.a. Virgil the Grammarian). These books are erroneously linked and not in any way the same.The short version: DON'T BUY THIS PAPERBACK EXPECTING THE VERGIL WHO WROTE THE AENEID.

OK - I've mentioned this elsewhere. But this book is described as being in English. It's not. It's in Latin.Can Amazon get their act together and CLEARLY indicate what language a book is in.

Fantastic quality all round of a Latin language classic.

El texto latino más empleado a la hora de leer / traducir a Virgilio. De referencia.

Eine schöne Edition. Der Druck ist bei mir in einigen Stellen nicht völllig gleichmäßig, was wohl die Vergünstigung erklärt (hat 17 € gekostet).Was ich an dieser Edition vermisse, ist eine einfache Inhaltsseite, wo man die einzelnen Werke aufzählt. Das finde ich wenig günstig.Aber Oxford ist Oxford, und das Buch an sich ist sehr schön.

Buena edición con las obras de Virgilio que todo estudiante de Clásicas debe comprar.La calidad del papel y de la encuadernación es bastante buena, de las que duran toda la vida con un mínimo de cuidado.

Apto y muy bueno para los amantes o estudiosos del latín que no quieran tener esta obra en formato digital.
