Antigone

Idiomatic Translation
Braun is an idiosyncratic scholar and translator. One of the most important lines in the play that six translators have rendered as 1) "Your heart is hot to do cold deeds"; 2) "You have so hot a heart for deed that makes the blood run cold" (Sheel); 3) "Thou hast a fiery soul for numbing work" (Storr); 4) "Cold things are wrapped around your hot heart, my dear sister!" (Theodoridis); 5) "Fiery is thy mood, Although thy deeds might chill the very blood" (Plumptre); and 6) "Thou hast a hot heart for chilling deeds" (Jebb); Braun renders as "This ardor of yours is spent on ashes." Thus, the theme of hot and cold, rash and reasonable, is undermined at the start. In fact, the Greek states:θερμὴν ἐπὶ ψυχροῖσι καρδίαν ἔχεις. This exactly corresponds to the hot/cold dichotomy in the six translations.

My favorite play
I’ve loved this play ever since I first read it for Theatre class. I love the unfaltering faith that Antigone has in her beliefs. She’s my favorite character from a play, and this is by far my favorite play.

Easy read, the translation is simple enough to get through this in an hour. Read it for a class but would recommend the story overall.
