Q: I'm a bit confused as to how the thickness is rated. 80 mil? 80 millimeters? I'm getting 1 mm. Am I missing something?

1 mil = 1 thousandth of an inch in thickness. Examples: Dime: 53 mils Credit Card: 30 mils 10 pieces of paper: 10 mils Plastic grocery bag: 2.25-3 mils These Noico butyl sheets are 80 "thousandths" of an inch or 0.08 inches thick. Its like 2 to 3 credit cards thick. Or roughly 80 sheets of loose note paper stacked tightly.

Q: Any difference between the silver and black or are they the same product jua different color?

The only difference between silver and black 80 mil materials is the colour of the aluminum backing. All the technical specs and the installation methods are identical.

Q: can this mat be used for under the hood and is it safe???

Noico Black 80 mil has a temperature limits of up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit only for a short term heating. You can install it under the hood if engine compartment temperature is within a mentioned specs. If not, we would then recommend looking for a hood solution (hood insulation) type of material and use Noico Black 80 mil material in combination with hood solution. The first layer that goes on a hood metal would be Noico Black 80 mil material. The second layer on top of Noico Black 80 would be hood solution type material. We are sorry, but we do not carry hood solution (hood insulation) materials. Please be note that Noico Black 80 mil is to be installed on a bare metal. Please note that all of our sound deadening materials are to be installed from the interior side. We recommend thoroughly cleaning, drying and degreasing a metal surface prior to installation of deadener to it.

Q: Is this flexible? I want to install it on the floor of a cargo van. The floor has ridges about every inch and a half. Would it go in the groves?

It's more flexible than most of the sound dampener have used. It should probably be pushed into crevices as small as a half inch. Anything smaller it will probably have to seal up above the grove.
