Epic, plus fun characters. See also The Westerner....
I purchased a used copy from Go_Peachy and it was as good as new! This 1937 film is a classic western. Directed in Cecile de Milles typical epic, if overblown, way. Many similarities to Coopers 1940 ‘The Westerner, ‘ directed by William Wyler. Both involve rather fictional accounts of historic characters (Hickok, Custer, Judge Bean). Both have interesting male friendships with them being on the same sides, then opposite sides, which tends to overshadow the romantic relationship between Cooper and the female lead.In The Plainsman, Jean Arthur has a stronger female role, Calamity Jane, than Doris Davenport’s in The Westerner. The Plainsman has a bit more historical accuracy. James Ellison gives good support as Buffalo Bill and the scenes with him and Cooper work especially well. A young Charles Pickford is excellent as the main villain. Look for Anthony Quinn, late in the movie, making an appearance as an Indian brave, early in his career. The Plainsman is on a grand scale and has less character development than The Westerner. Both are must have films if you like movies from that period, or like westerns or are fans of the underrated, great Gary Cooper.Plenty of action. Yes it’s corny, but that’s the charm of that era of film.

Good
Good oldie. Down to earth like I remember the old westerns use to be. Supposedly followed along Wild Bills life a bit. How can one beat a western with “Mr Western” Cooper staring in it. Thanks

Snowy picture scenes
I don't like the picture quality, it's snowy. Is this normal because it's an old movie? I purchased it in Blue Ray.

Happy, dignified ending
Of course, writing style has changed from the early 1800's to the 2020's. I had to read a few pages before adjusting to the older English usage. At first the noble moves slowly but picks up speed as Cooper develops the story. After the first few pages I couldn't put it down. I first read about Natty Bumpo as an adolescent and he became an endearing character to me. Cooper's story's usually end on a melancholy note but "The Prairie" was happier than usual. I was glad that he treated Hawkeye with a dignified and respectful ending as an old man satisfied with years.

"Don't Know Much About His-tor-ry. . ."
. . . But Mr. DeMille knew plenty about biology. Though terribly historically inaccurate, this is a lovable and entertaining movie. It tells the story of Wild Bill Hickok (about fighting Indians with guns--"Keep the barrels hot, this next one's mine!"), Buffalo Bill Cody, Calamity Jane Canary, and the taming of the West. The sparks really fly between Wild Bill (Gary Cooper) and Calamity Jane (Jean Arthur)--such on-screen chemistry. You don't really want to pay much attention to the story line or plot because you are so hypnotized by Jean's wisecracks directed at Bill and her hard to disguise tomboyishy love for him--very funny and you wish you could be there in person so you could see ol' Coop turn red in the face at her attempts to get his attention. Aw shucks, ma'am.

Plaisir intense garanti

Worst ever DVD I have ever bought.
Love Gary Cooper movies, but this must have been the worst he has made. We are currently culling some of our possessions and I had no trouble throwing this out. Thanks anyway.Steve

Excellent
Gary Cooper was extremely handsome in the film. Especially in that black shirt. The story was also interesting. Coop fans can't miss it.
