I needed this
Exactly what I was missing in the kitchen. This knife is a joy to use. It is easily held, nicely balanced, and a joy to use when chopping vegetables. It replaces a larger sontoku. It came nice and sharp. Using a ceramic rod a few times a week brings it right back to its factory edge. Definitely would be a great gift to anyone who cooks. If you don't have room in your knife block/holder, make sure to order the protective sleeve. Also ordered the Mercer ten inch Bread knife and it works great for sourdough loaves.

I Love this Knife
I bought my Folks a Chef's Knife from this Company for Christmas and I love it. I almost bought myself one when I saw this Knife instead. I already have a couple of pretty good Chef's Knife so I figured I would go with something different. It got me thinking why do Kitchen Knives all have a Pointed End? I have never stabbed anything with my Kitchen Knifes so I just don't get it. I figured the shape of this knife would work better to move what I am chopping from the cutting board to where ever I need it. That turned out to be true.

Rectangular knives are special
I have a 'chef's knife' that I like very much. I like the length, the weight, the balance, and the way it holds an edge. It is a great knife that a found a couple of years ago. BUT I also carve fruit and vegetables into small pieces for some of my meals, and I wanted a knife that I could use as a shovel from cutting board to container. My pointed chef's knife is not very good at that since it get slimmer and slimmer with the length of the blade. So I went looking for a rectangular blade. One type is a rectangular blade that is 5 or 6 inches. It seems to be an Asian tradition. I tried one and found it unwieldy. Then scrambling through Amazon available knives I found this one. The reviews were good so I decided to try it. And: it is the same length as my chef's knife, it is a bit heavier than my chef's knife but not much, it sharpens very nicely, the balance is good, and it feels good in my hand. And it transfers small bits from cutting board to bowl very, very nicely. It is just what I was looking for.

Good knife, plenty sharp.
I'll wait to see how well it holds an edge. Heavy, but manageable, and plenty sharp.

Mercer Meets and Exceeds Expectations
I’ve had Mercer knives for roughly six years and adding this knife to our array was a great choice. I personally like full tang knives with wrap around handles. The quality of the knife is excellent and I recommend for use in all situations. This knife gives me a full hand feel and is comfortable to cut with ease and precision.
