No Cowboy Outfit this...
In case you are wondering who Kraido are, they are not some cowboy outfit operating out of China about to send you an anonymous pack of seeds in a polythene bag, but an extremely professional company from Dereham in Norfolk. The seeds you receive will be professionally packaged with extremely clear written instructions and diagrams provided. Each variety grown by this company has been specially selected for some particular feature. In this case, the beans are ideal for container growing as they form bush-like plants. You will receive 50 seeds which is very generous indeed. The ones I was sent do not expire until the end of 2023 so I will have plenty of time to plant them in the next two years.

All 4 that were tested ,germinated in 6 days
These are Dalmaziano dwarf beans .They say there are 50 on the packet. There are 52 in the pack, 4 of them are small red beans with very light tan speckles and the rest are beans with the tan colouring and red mottled pigmentations.THe pack says they have Alufoil protection.....There is no Aluminium or Foil of any kind in the packet that I can see , it is a paper packet with loose Beans inside.A few were broken but I didnt count them in the 52 as there are often broken beans in packets of Bean seeds. The packet has the usual sowing/growing table .sow march to April for indoor and transplant may to june or sow direct may to june.6" apart in 15" rows.Harvest July through to OctoberPlants should reach around 23" tall and pods should be about 5" long ,red , green and stripeyGermination should take 7 - 14 daysI decided to try germinating 2 of the red and 2 of the speckled beans. The house is typically at 17 to 20 degrees and they should germinate between 15 to 20 degrees C but its not the ideal time of year to try them (oct-nov).We have had luck before with germinating in ziplock bags with paper towel for the wetness so that is what was tried this time. Its 6 days since I put them in to germinate and all 4 have developed a strong white root .I shall pot them on into small containers to grow indoors under a grow light. The rest will go outside next year.

I have successfully grown similar beans for many years – but these must be for next year
Received on 9th July, these seeds must now be for next year. That is no problem, as they are in a sealed pack and claim to be good until November 2023. However, reviewing them in full must wait until the late summer next year.I could, of course open the pack now and run a small germination test, but we can be sure they would not be on the market if they had not already passed such a test with flying colours. Better to keep the pack sealed until 1st May next year, when I will sow them directly into the ground.Besides my confidence on germination – seriously unhelpful weather, pigeons and other pests may of course be a problem when it comes to it, but not the beans’ fault – I am pretty sure they will grow and crop well in my garden. I have been growing a similar bean for more than a few years past, getting a couple of meals out of about 30 seeds, plus home-grown seed for next year. They are so reliable, they have been going on so long I don’t even remember where the original seed came from. The pack offers growing instructions, offering a few choices on when and how to start them off. With these and with other beans, my practice is to sow on 1st May, put two seeds into any gaps on 1st June, and transplant spare seedlings into any remaining gaps on 1st July. It works. This years’ crop is currently in flower, will likely have beans for the table by the end of this month, and the seed crop by the end of August.

Something novel, a bit different
This is rather a fascinating packet of seeds. Dwarf French beans but not the usual green but a kind of mottled red colour. I don’t know if this is one of those ‘heritage’ strains (like the yellow or purple carrots you can buy) or whether it’s a kind of bean popularly used in Europe or elsewhere that we just aren’t familiar with here in the UK. Whichever it is, then seem really interesting and is enticing to try them out.The instructions on the pack are clear and the pack says it contains 50 seeds so there’s plenty for me to try a few and give some to my dad to try out my sister. A little touch of exotic in the garden!Of course, at the moment they are just seeds and it’ll be 6 months or more before we’ll know how they’ll grow and what the beans taste like. I’ll come back with updates comments when I’ve tried them!
