Review: This was a great Christmas present for my 9 year old who is a fan of the Looney Tunes! I really appreciate the book’s quality, thickness, and lay-flat pages. The 200 page book is a solid inch thick and filled with descriptions of the top 100 best episodes dating back as early as the 1930’s! It’s fun to see how characters like Bugs Bunny and Tweety have evolved over the years in the drawings. The book includes a few early hand drawn sketches the artists did of the characters in some of the episodes. Each episode description includes some combination of the episode title, date released, director, who wrote the story, who did the animation, layout, backgrounds, voices, and music. It’s fun how the table of contents is organized in a way that shows you one frame of the episode with the title and page number it can be found on. It made a great decoration at my child’s Looney Tune themed birthday party. I was pleasantly surprised that it’s so much more than what I thought I was getting and it is filled with so many facts and so much information about the Looney Tunes. It definitely gives readers more of an appreciation for all that went into each episode written and the history of the Looney Tunes. I would totally recommend this book to any Looney Tunes fan! Review: For people who like me grew up watching The Bugs Bunny Show on weekday television, this book brings back many happy memories. The selection of "The 100 greatest Looney Tunes" (out of more than a thousand Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons made in the period 1930-1969) followed an online poll, and inevitably does not include everyone's own personal favourites. (I would have included 'Boston Quackie' and at least one more Foghorn Leghorn cartoon.) On the other hand, there were many in this book which I have never seen. Mostly these are now period pieces (some were made as wartime propaganda) but a sadder example is 'Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs' with its all-black, racially stereotyped cast and, for all its artistic merits, unacceptable for showing today. The book is heavily illustrated with stills from the cartoons and these are beautifully reproduced. Each cartoon gets a plot summary and some expert comments. My one complaint is that the cartoon credits (director, animators etc) are printed in black on a red background and very difficult to read in anything but bright light. But overall this book is a joy.
