Not What I Expected - Does Not Draw Tight
Update - March 7, 2022Now that I have had some time to work a bit more with this tool I have decided to update this review since it has proven to be a little more beneficial than I had thought. My original review is still accurate, but I find that the rings, while not real tight, are strong enough to hold pretty well and should stand the test of time as I had hoped. I am still using some wire ties to help keep the fencing in place while I apply some rings, but much less than before. It just took a while to get a system down for using the tool. That said I am changing my two star rating to a four star.Original ReviewI have about 300 feet of 12 gauge farm fencing around my back lot that was installed some 30+ years ago. It has larger holes nearer the top that are large enough for my small beagle to squeeze her body through. To keep her from escaping I am adding some 14 gauge welded wire fence in front which has smaller openings.I purchased this tool to join the two pieces of fencing together in random areas over the entire length of the fence. I started the project using some good outdoor UV protected wire ties which work well, but I know over time will dry and break. I searched and found this tool and rings which seemed like the perfect solution. The tool itself is not flimsy or lightweight, but it is not made from the highest quality materials either. I don't see it lasting very long. However, I purchased it for this one job and it came with a lot of rings so there is that. The issue I have with the tool is it does not draw the fencing tight together as I had imagined it would. It's not that the fence wire is too small or the rings are too large for it to draw tight - it just does not apply enough pressure. It looks like the angle the tool needs to be on to install a ring, which is about 45 degrees, prevents it from drawing tight. The design of the tool would have been better if the head was angled more so the rings were installed perpendicular to the fence wire versus the 45 degree angle that is needed. In the end I plan to still install rings since they are made from metal and will outlast the wire ties. I can go back over each ring with a pair of pliers to squeeze it tight, but that is certainly not an ideal process. Regardless I will be doing that after the fence is installed using the wire ties which allow me to pull the fencing tight together. Using these pliers while building the fence would be a very awkward and frustrating process. There is still some value to the tool but had I known what the result would have been I definitely would not have purchased this tool. I would not recommend it unless you are okay with rings that are not tight or don't mind following up with a pair of pliers to draw each one closed. I am very disappointed.

my wife loves it.
bought this for my wife, she likes to hobby farm and constantly connects chicken wire and dog fence etc. I taught her how to use rebar ties and tools and that went well but then - - - I bought these hog pliers. she loves them. says they are so simple and easy. and I don't have to help build fences.

Perfect
Amazing tool that wraps around the bands and doesn't puncture the line

Better than manual
Let me just start by saying if you need to do a lot of clamps that this will get you to the finish line faster however…it does get hung up (jammed) a few times here and there. Loading it was very easy the first time but the second time it didn’t want to latch as easily. It has some flaws, could be sturdier. But it still functioned good…could be better with some improvements to the structure.

Oil it!
Unless it is well oiled and clean it won't work "right". The "staples" won't load into place and you'll be constantly fidgeting with it. Oil it and the staples click into place and it works as imagined.

Got this for my husband
I don't use it, he does. Arrived on time and everything was as listed. Would buy from again.

Works great
I used this to wire together hardware cloth and it works better than zip ties that are the temporary solution. Thank you

Is it broken / defective ?
The media could not be loaded. Just received this tool, but can't get the Spring-loaded slide to extract. No instructions included, but it should be sort of obvious how this should work. Attached picture (1st pic) is how I think it's supposed to operate to get the slide open. Lifting on the two extending tabs must lift the catch above the bottom of the slide frame (2nd pic). But, short of getting pliers out to bend / force those two tabs upwards, it's not possible to get the catch to lift above the slot in the bottom of the slide frame. What am I missing ? Or is it deffective ?Edit 2019-03-05Vendor provided pic #3 as advise on how to operate the hog ring cartridge slide. Thank you ProsterUS.That was enough to clue me in to the fact that the two tabs sticking out the end of the slide must be pressed in. That part wasn't intuitive ; I hadn't tried that yet. Those tabs are part of a component that locks or releases the little finger tab sticking up on the top surface of the slide.Pic #4 (video) is how the slide works if you do it just right ; sometimes it hangs / sticks and you have to wiggle and jiggle it to get it to slide in or out. Will add more stars after I use it for a while.

Great for joining bits of mesh
I bought these Hog Ring Pliers because I need to put a mesh skirt around my solar panels to keep the pesky pigeons out. The videos show using UV stabilised zip cable ties to connect pieces of mesh. I thought that was too fiddly and I bought these which did the job easily. And they won't deteriorate under sunlight.Unfortunately there are no instructions so it took a bit of fiddling to find out how to load the blocks of Hog Rings into it. Then it's just like a stapler.

Timesaver
Purchased to assist in building a wire mesh fence. Wasn't disappointed in the least. This simple tool for joining mesh to straining wires is simply the best. If you like twisting wires do not buy, this tool achieves in seconds what would otherwise take a lifetime.

Great replacement for youProfessional pest company
Bought at last minute to replace a professional pair we lost. Was expecting them to have some issues but pleasantly surprised l. Our Pest Control Technicians have installed over 5000m2 of bird netting so far with these and they worked perfectly and still do. Good product value for money.

Poor quality
They arrived with a spring hanging out and no visible sign of how the spring is held in or used. Looks like a factory second as it’s not like the picture. To add insult to injury to return it I have to find somewhere to return it that is open outside of my working hours
