A Classic, Heartwarming Story
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anne of Green Gables by L.M MontgomeryWhen Marilla and her brother Mathew decided to adopt an orphan it was a boy they were expecting to help around the farm, not the freckled, non-stop talking, redhead girl that arrived. However, it isn’t long before Anne has worked her beautiful nature into the hearts of the pair and everyone in the town of Avonlea. She entertains and exasperates in equal measure with the fun, trouble and mischief she brings but they wouldn’t be without her for a second.I adored this book so much as it made me feel like a kid again snuggled in bed surrounded by all my teddy bears and reading my books. It reminded me somewhat of my favourite book when I was young which was Pollyanna as both the main characters are very alike, never stop talking, see the positive in everything and both melt even the coldest hearts of the townspeople. The descriptive dialogue that Montgomery used was so vivid that I felt I was immersed in the middle of it all. It was such a heartwarming tale that had me so filled with love for all the characters and a longing for more of Anne of Green Gables

In all innocence...
...I've been buying this title for my granddaughters for ages with nothing to go on but its reputation. I was expecting a tomboy. I have recently diminished my ignorance by reading the book. What I got was mawkish stereotypical boilerplate reinforcing gender roles of a vanished/varnished world.I am a great believer in the power of the printed word. I regret my complicity in reinforcing gender roles in my granddaughters.

A Timeless Classic
Anne of Green Gables by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery which was first published in 1908 is considered a classic children's novel and has sold over 50 million copies being translated into at least 36 languages. Films, made-for-television movies, animations, plays and even musicals have followed. So what is it about the story of Anne Shirley the young orphan that through a misunderstanding leads to her adoption by Marilla and Mathew so enduringly popular still? Perhaps it is because although the book begins in 1876 it has even to the modern reader an almost timeless quality and that the writing can not fail to move even the most stony hearted of us.Montgomery's lonely childhood starved of love and affection would lead her to create imaginary friends and worlds to cope with her loneliness. In essence Anne of Green Gables would be the recreation of a childhood world that was denied to the author. Suffering from depression and having to care for her mentally ill husband for decades there is even speculation that she may have taken her own life through a drug overdose. Accompanying this is the the fact that her career was plagued by publishing and film disputes. However she created a kind of fantasy world (continued by 10 subsequent novels which Anne appeared in) where goodness, friendship, nobility and doing the right prevail. Also it can be reasonably argued that Anne acts as a feminist and as an individualist being consistent and true to her beliefs and views, creating a space to grow and learn.Despite my advanced years I have never read the book before but hope that this wonderfully moving story will be enjoyed by new generations thanks to this new republication with its catchy cover.A review copy was provided by the publisher.
