The Golden Oriole
I have been in Pakistan once, going along the Karakorum Highway which Trevelyan missed, and India four times, mostly in the Himalayas. So I am familiar with some of the country Raleigh Trevelyan describes - both past and present. This is a marvelous narrative - really a memoir - of the old and new. The child of a British Indian Army officer, Trevelyan spent early years in the country; then later returned 1977-84. He writes about his five journeys, relating them to his early years. Beautifully written. I would recommend this book, without reservation. In fact, I have - to a friend who will be visiting India for the first time this December.
