They offered that to me as well, I never did get around to actually reviewing the product and sending it in. Having said that though, the light does work quite well for what I use it for which is coloring on my couch.

Is it bright enough for doing artwork such as painting?

I haven’t used mine for art work, but I use it for doing handwork, crocheting, etc. I even use it in the daytime. It makes a big difference. It is very user friendly. It is bright, and you can adjust the light to about any angle you want. It also has different type of lighting & can be dimmed.

Would it be possible to have this plug into a timer and turn on automatically, or is the on and off function tied exclusively to the remote?

A timer should work fine with this lamp. There are controls on the main post as well as the remote. And I tested what happens when the lamp loses power (like would happen with a timer). When I plugged it back in, the lamp comes on (even if it was off before losing power) to the same temperature and brightness that it was using before.
