Review: It comes with a compilation of explained algorithms to help healthcare professionals in the process of clinical decision. The book is not flawed nor obsolete, and shows no intent of replacing the psychiatric interview, as one may have said. It is very well organized and shows great concern about the tolerance and security of treatment in its long-term use. I use it to guide and teach GPs in their daily routine in primary health care unities, as a tool to optimize psychiatric treatments. Review: I'm in psychiatry--and my least favorite thing to do is remembering an ACLS style "algorithm" because there is absolutely NO "one size fits all". It just is the wrong way to approach diagnosis and treatment. That said. This book is clear, direct and give you a line of sight for tough cases and easy cases when your brain is too tired to remember...what would be good for that or what exam should I do right this moment? It's also good for the novice/new provider---it gives clear suggestions as to where your treatment plan should be going. It DOES NOT make your decisions FOR YOU--you have to have good assessment skills FIRST and then this book can give you clear guidance as to....okay....this seems like depression....what next? It suggests....questions you might want to ask to refine your diagnosis and come to a decision on what medications or therapies might be the best approach. Let me be clear---this book should NEVER be used as a definitive "way" to do things---if this, then that. That is not how to practice psychiatry safely or effectively. This book will GUIDE you after you've made some preliminary assessments, have it narrowed down based on what you see, hear and know about the patient you're seeing. It may clear it up for you too, that your initial diagnosis---was off base. The explanations are clear, the assessments are clear---and with some experience in diagnostics, this book can absolutely help you see where your treatment plans might need to go, with good advice, strong rationales and proven tactics to get to the answers the patients need. I use the book every day in my practice....there are days I am too tired or too many things going on and I reach for this book when I just....need a nudge to clear my thinking. There are other times--I really need a second opinion before going to a colleague and consulting---this book can do that too. It's helpful, insightful, and gives the clinician a stepping off point. The rest needs to be all you when you make decisions on how to treat your patients.

One of my preceptors suggested this book to me. Now that I am actually seeing patients myself, I use this book frequently. Buy it!
