Q: Can anyone tell me why the interior door knob has a whole in it???

If you're referring to the pin hole on the knob itself...If a person, especially such as a small child or senior gets locked inside the room by mistake, a pin is inserted into the hole on the outside of the room and unlocks the door. The pin is included in the kit, it is a small P - shape tool. I store that, laying on the top edge door molding or in a drawer close by, so its handy. This is only on privacy, push lock doors for bed and bath. It happens more than you think. Closets and storage, basements doors you dont want a lock, get different locks, passage, which never should lock on inside of room. Hope that helps.

I have several of these door knobs. Some make a little noise some do not.
