An Incredible End to a Series That I Will Miss Dearly!
Words can’t describe how it feels to read the final book in a series that you have been reading for 6 years. The Highland Guard series was not only my introduction to Historical Romance, but the Romance genre in general. While I look forward to Monica McCarty’s future projects, I don’t know what I’ll do without the Highland Guard brigands and the women they love. Anyways, onto the review! In a fitting end to a great series, this was my favorite Highland Guard novel. Despite his constant fighting with the other members of the Guard, I always liked Alex Seton as a character. He acted as the conscience that the rest of the Guard and Bruce needed. When I found out that he was getting his own book, even after his desertion, I was beyond excited – my excitement only grew when I discovered that his love interest would be Bella’s daughter!Joan is likable from her first appearance in the book, during which I was elated to see the paternal side to my personal favorite member of the Guard, Lachlan. Upon reading the synopsis for the book, I assumed that Bella and Lachlan didn’t know about Joan’s involvement in the Guard so I was happy to see that not only did they know, but Lachlan acted as her guardian. As a couple, Joan and Alex were perfectly suited for one another. Given Joan’s history with men, who better to bring her back to life than a gallant knight? As Alex is still struggling with his decision to leave the Guard, Joan, who is fiercely loyal to the cause, is the perfect companion for him. The development of their relationship was sweet and natural, and of course, the chemistry was off the charts. I never would have expected such hot sex scenes from the chivalric, honorable Alex Seton. Finally, I loved the glimpses that I got of the other members of the Guard. The Epilogue was bittersweet – told from Bruce’s perspective, it was the ideal end to the book. I can’t say enough that I will miss these characters. If you haven’t read any of the books in this series yet, you are missing out. Go pick up The Chief and enjoy the 12 book rollercoaster ride that is The Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty. My Takeaway: This final installment in one of my all time favorite series’ was easily the best, in my opinion. Every book in this series has a place on my favorite’s shelf. I will continue to re-read this series for years to come and can’t wait to see what Monica McCarty has in store for her readers.

A Wonderful Ending to a WONDERFUL Highland Guard Series!!!
I loved this last installment of the Highland Guard series! What a wonderful surprise to have the Ghost not be one of the guys! The relationship between Joan and Alex is wonderful, romantic and strong. Monica really wraps up the series well with the battle of Bannock Burn which is the perfect conclusion for the series!I'm so glad that "The Dragon" got his story and HEA within the "The Ghost" and he was brought back to the fold! The plot, characters and suspense, typical of the writing we are used to from Monica McCarty, were so well-developed and intriguing that I couldn't put it down!I especially loved how there was a recap at the end of all the Highland Guard members we have to come to know and love over the years! It was a beautiful and seamless wrap up and answered any questions there may have been! A great read and magnificent end to a series I loved, enjoyed and looked forward to reading! I never wanted it to end but the way it did end was so satisfying that it was the perfect conclusion!I will truly miss this series but I am glad everyone had a happily ever after. Can't wait for the next adventure Monica McCarty shares with us!

Excellent Conclusion to an Amazing Series
“The Ghost” is Robert the Bruce’s most important spy. Alex Seton, former member of the Bruce’s elite fighting force now allied to the English is tasked with uncovering the spy. Unfortunately, the Ghost is Joan Comyn, the woman Alex loves. As the pivotal battle of Bannockburn draws closer, Alex must decide where his loyalties and his love truly lie. This is a fantastic novel. The characters of Joan and Alex are so well-written. Both are honourable people who agonise over the difficult decisions they must make in a time of war. Alex is an amazing protagonist. He tries so hard to be noble and honourable in difficult times, it is hard not to love him. As expected in this author’s novels, there is plenty of tension, plenty of action, and eventually a happy ending.Unfortunately, for me the ending is bittersweet, since this is the final novel of the Highland Guard series. I have enjoyed getting to know this cast of characters over the last few years and I have been impressed by the author’s thorough and detailed research. My sincere thanks to the author for a fantastic series of novels.

Magnifique !

Excellent book, excellent series!!
The Ghost was brilliant!!! Loved Alex and Joan, her spying for Robert Bruce and Alex straddling the fence trying to do what he thinks is right. Thankfully he eventually clambered that fence and ended on the right side!I’ve read thousands of books in my life, and lots of series, and I can honestly say it’s the best series of books I’ve ever read!Well done Ms McCarty for intertwining actual events, some fiction, a lot of action and some wonderful romance! Only someone really talented could pull off such a feat!!
