This is a better release than the 1990 CD composition-wise
This is a better release than the 1990 CD composition-wise. I've listened to the 1990 version since 1991 when I got it as a kid. I've listened to this more times than I can remember since I bought it a few weeks ago. I compared it to the original and it's not worse on audio quality. The audio quality is good enough to tell a difference between full WAV format rip and 320 kbps MP3.

24 tracks of excellent submarine warfare music in this "Limited Collector's Edition" compared to 10 on the original soundtrack
A wonderful soundtrack for an excellent movie (There's nothing like Sean Connery, in full Scottish accent, playing a Soviet submarine captain.)This is the second time we've purchased the Hunt for Red October soundtrack. The original release of the soundtrack only had 10 tracks, of which the best is the main title, "Hymn to Red October." Then, I don't know how, we stumbled across this edition which has 24 tracks. Wow. So much more music, and even some of the tracks that are duplicated are better on this release. 70 minutes of awesome music.Sadly this was not available for digital download (which is how we like to buy our music nowadays), so we spent $21 and bought the CD. It was totally worth it.

...additionally...
I'm not going to reiterate what other reviewers have pointed out about the severe editing, the non-chronological order, or the lack of included lyrics. Although totally true, I could have dealt with all of that and said "4 stars" (due to MANY missing tracks) but I'm knocking off an extra star because I can't listen to it on my computer without all of that #$%* anti-pirating static, which is almost unbearable on the first track and crackles throughout (which are absolutely NOT from the analog-to-digital process).I understand that the multi-million-dollar music companies like MCA need to protect their investments. However, I bought the CD in the hopes of transferring it to MY PERSONAL iPod so that I could listen in my non-CD-player-available car. And because MP3 technology is so ubiquitous, it's nigh impossible to locate a plain old CD player anymore so I don't own one. Funnily enough, all of my old CDs play in my computer just fine...and I'm not about to buy one just for this CD so I guess it'll have to go into the Yard Sale box which is a damn shame because I really liked the music. If I were just rating the actual music, I'd say 5 stars. Beautifully composed and performed, it's stirring to my core. (I just wish there were more of it.) I am confused why "Two Wives" wasn't in the film but is on the soundtrack, but it still has the same feeling as the rest of the score, so it didn't seem out of place as I listened. The Analog-to-Digital conversion isn't usually an issue for me, and wasn't with this recording, but then I'm not using super-high-quality headphones/stereo equipment.

Oh .... MY HEART!
Mr. Poledouris at his best - he captures every nuance of the film and cradles it , lofts it higher, brings it to life - was the music written for the film or the film for the music? This is how closely woven it is. I LOVE this soundtrack ! I am so glad I got the full score CD - it was a birthday gift. Now I want to find the written score, get me an orchestra and chorus and stage it myself - wow! So good. Oh, MY HEART - so happy!

Five Red Stars
This movie is fantastic and never gets old. I wish I could say the same about K-19 Widowmaker. No movie is great without an equally great soundtrack, and this movie is no exception. Thanks Basil! Now buy it, play it in your car, and go full fathom five. Just try not to do it literally like that Veyron owner who drove his car into a lake to defraud the insurance company. So play it on the road but stay dry, and do it at night in a BMW so you can enjoy the experience of the red ambient "submarine lights" that BMWs have glowing in the cockpit.Or, get a plastic model nuclear submarine and play this soundtrack when bathing.Or you can play it when not doing any of the above, but you won't get the full experience. Just sayin'

Oh, that Russian choir
I have only one complaint about this CD: it's way too short. While all the tracks accurately portray the moods in the movie, so much more could have been added. That little item notwithstanding, buy this CD just to hear the first track. Like other reviewers, I simply can't get enough of that Russian choir, especially the men. Basil Poledouris is a multi-talented composer, able to use just about any language, but he really reached into the soul of Russian choral music with this piece.I have two copies: one for home and one for the car. You may well find yourself doing the same thing.

Great opening theme.
I bought this for the opening music but haven't listened to the rest.

Floats above other film scores on ethereal musical waves.
Another faultless film score from Basil Poledouris, aka "The man who did the Conan the Barbarian music". This one has a nice Russian flavour to it what with it being about a Soviet submarine.I can imagine Sean Connery paddling around the caribbean sea on his lilo, rum and coke in hand, listening to this on his Walkman and remembering the good old days when he played Captain Ramius. Sean probably would be chuckling about how he got to strangle the chief spy guy from the BBC series 'Spooks'.

Outstanding Score by one of the great composers
Basil Polidaris is one of the most under-rated composers around but has managed to write some great scores for great films over the past 40 years.Like the previous reviews stated, the apex of this score if right at the beginning, you will not find a more rousing opening. Because the opening is so good however, the rest of the score does seem to go downhill, however this is great as powerfull scores can 'cloud' the rest of the film and with the superb acting and dialogue there was no need for a brash score to cover it.The score is appropriately tense throughout and wonderfully conveys the atmosphere generated by the film. For a detailed and accurate breakdown of individual tracks see the review below this!

Just beautiful.
I bought this for my husband for Christmas but in truth we both love this soundtrack and should have bought it years ago. It's truly moving and is the perfect soundtrack to a great movie.
