Mighty Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1

A Classic for the Modern Ages
If you want to start collecting and reading the Golden Age of Marvel comics, these types of trades are simply perfect! These are stories before Marvel was a group when Spidey was a new character in 'Amazing Fantasy' before being The Amazing Spider-Man. You get to see a world that was the '60s and the characters living in that time and age.And it's incredible to read these simpler stories that are refreshing from all these drab, overreaching and creatively bankrupt ideas from Modern Marvel.Something about the simplicity of the fights, plot and characters makes them all likeable and easily understandable even in the year 2023!It was concerned about telling a story of a teenage superhero which the publisher didn't want because it wouldn't be popular. They didn't want a hero to have tragedy in their life because we couldn't relate to it.Stan Lee and Steve Ditko proved the publishers wrong. And this changed how comics were being written and drawn. It's surprising how dark these early comics could get on an emotional scale and how different Peter Parker was from the one we know today. If you want to get into Spider-Man and not worry about the thousand different storylines Modern Marvel is doing. Buy this for a much simpler and easier time.

Amazing Fantasies…
This book is great for younger readers and casuals who want to read some of The Wall-Crawlers first stories. It comes in a smaller size that is only slightly taller than a manga book. Steve Ditko really shows off the physique of the Spider-Man perfectly as he doesn’t show him as a giant and god-like character like comic legends such as Jack Kirby do.The book has 10 (or 11 if you count Amazing Fantasy #15) issues featuring Spider-Man’s most infamousFoes.Amazing Fantasy #15 is basically the origin of Spider-Man. Teenager gets bitten by spider, Uncle gets shot, yadda yadda yadda. The characters will have more to do later down the line.Amazing Spider-Man #1 features the Chameleon as Spider-Man’s first foe. It also shows Spider-Man stop a rocket from crashing, saving J. Jonah Jameson’s son’s life. Of course, JJJ thinks the opposite. Also, the Fantastic Four make a short cameo in this appearance which is good too.Spider-Man #2 features the Vulture and the Tinkerer as villains. The Vulture is just an old man in a flying suit who steals stuff like Money and Jewellery and puts up a good fight against Spider-Man. But is foiled by Spider-Man at the end.The Tinkerer is just a strange foe. With odd motives.Amazing Spider-Man #3 features Doctor Octopus as he goes mad after being caught up in an explosion at an atomic station. I’d say this is one of the best issues so far. (Also, this story also shows The Human Torch!)Amazing Spider-Man #4 shows the Sandman. Flint Marko is an escaped convict who was caught up in an experiment that turned him into a—well, Sandman. This story also has the first appearance of Betty Brant who will turn into an eventual love interest for Peter Parker. The issues 5–10 show greats like Dr. Doom, The Lizard, The Vulture, The Human Brain, Electro and The Enforcers.Overall, I’m giving this book an 8/10. The illustrations by Steve Ditko are great and it shows a wide selection of foes and characters for a volume 1 book. One thing I’d warn you is that the dialogue is very lengthy and of it’s time. So if that’s not your style, maybe this book isn’t for you. And that’s fine!

The true origin...
It's great to see the inception of such a popular character in pop culture. Although somewhat of it's time, it's insightful for your average Spider-Man fan, like myself. A solid 4 stars...

Excellent collection of the first 10 issues of Spdey
A must have for anyone interested in the early years of Spider-man by Steve Dikto and Stan Lee. The book reprints Amazing Fantasy #15 and issues #1 to 10 of Amazing Spider-man.
