Beautifully illustrated book about color names
This is a beautiful book with color illustrations that show gradations of color and how they are named. This is a helpful reference for artists or an interesting book for anyone interested in color and specifically the history of color naming.

Fun and useful book for artists
There isn't much text in this book as far as information, there is lists of the colors and what makes up these colors. It's a nice way to get the brain working to get me painting. I try to use the color descriptions to make the color and then start working on a project. It has helped me make a few colors for my new painting. "Avocado." Not just yellow and green.

Not as Interesting as I Anticipated
I heard about this book while reading another book that repeatedly mentioned it, and as an artist I was intrigued. It’s not as colorful or as interesting as I thought it would be, mild. The colors are not as vivid as I expected or desired.

not great colour samples
this book is old !!! that it was written VERY long ago. There are samples of each colour but they are less than 1" square and honestly don't correlate to what I would know them as. I am a painter and interior decorator so I do have some experience. I just didn't need this in my library.

It's a reproduction, not a renovation
I read many of the reviews here and noted the criticisms levelled at the quality of the colours and how they don't seem to match the descriptions. I agree entirely, the colours shown are faded or fugitive; however, if you read the publisher's notes it is made pretty clear there that the book is intended to be a close facsimile of the original in its current state. If the colours as printed seem off, it is because they have faded over time, lost their lustre through oxidation, or just gone fugitive in the original book. So the book is an accurate reproduction, not a renovation! In my opinion, therefore, the book is pretty wonderful in bringing to us today a masterpiece of definition and categorisation at what is an impressively low price. So actually, well done Natural History Museum! Top marks. And yet, I am left with a puzzle. What we need perhaps is an academic project to recreate the colour palettes as they might originally have existed but using either current non fugitive colours, or more or less fugitive colours together with formulaic recipes to enable such a reproduction. For my part, I shall have a stab at it with some decent watercolours just for the hell of it :-)

Interessante e per curiosi
Libro decisamente interessante. Non compratelo per guardare delle immagini perché ce ne sono poche e di stampa non soddisfacente ma questo non è lo scopo per il quale è stato ristampato.

Short but very interesting.
As someone interested in colour, and who paints with watercolour, this was a short but sweet read. For the price, it's a nice little reference book to keep on my shelf.
