This is the original display, and not a cheap clone.
The Reprap 12864 came in the mail on Friday. I've noticed several differences between the Reprap, and the clone 12864 displays:1. The clone has a brightness adjustment on the lower left hand corner while the Reprap doesn't.2. The color of the pc board is different on both models.3. The Reprap has a D shaped encoder shaft while the clone has splines. Only the clone comes with a knob for the encoder. You have to print your own case, stop button, and control knob. WWW.Thingiverse.Com has a lot of different versions to choose from.4. The Reprap has better construction around the display where the clone has a lot of LED light coming out all over the place.5. The Reprap has the rear plastic sleeves around the electrical connectors upside down so I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 stars. It took a little time to figure out, and I thought that I received a defective unit until I figured it out. The clone has the plastic sleeves in the correct orientation. The display will flash & beep if you plug both cables in the way the notch out is set up. I was able to plug the cables in the correct way without modifying the plastic sleeves. It just requires a little force, but it fits without any modifications. Another reviewer said that EXP1 & EXP2 were reversed on his model. If you're looking at the plugs on the back of the board, you will see EXP1 on the left, and EXP2 on the right. I don't know what his board looks like or how it was marked. If you use the adapter board which is included with the display, you will see that the plastic sleeves are also reversed. The adapter & display work correctly together but will require reversing the orientation of the cables if you use it with any clone adapter or display. Since this is the original design, we could say that the clones are backward orientation, and this is correct.6. I had an issue with the display shifting constantly on the clone until I installed extension cables. The Reprap & TFT35 displays didn't have this issue. The package has a label recommending that the cables are within 25 to 30 CM. I've used the clone with extensions which enabled the display to work better. The TFT35 also worked with extensions. So far it appears to work okay with extensions.7. The Reprap came with a case, two cables, RAMPS adapter, 8 GB class 4 micro SD card, and a micro SD card to full size SD card adapter. The clone just came with 2 cables, RAMPS adapter, and a control knob.8. The encoder knob on the clone selects a function when you turn it counter clockwise. The Reprap & TFT35 12864 select a function when you turn it clockwise.9. The beep tone isn't as loud in the Reprap as it is in the clone but is still loud enough to hear.10. All of these displays lack documentation, software, information on how to use them or where to download a case, buttons, knobs or in the case of the LCD35 where to download firmware or how to edit your printer's firmware to enable the Reprap Smart LCD Controller.

Lights up, but no display - Problem solved
I ordered this as it was recommended as a good tool when doing firmware upgrades on my Raise3D N2 which runs Marlin. I hooked up the two ribbon cables to the Exp1 and Exp2 sockets on the Motion Controller Board. When I booted up the printer, the display powers up but I never get anything on the display. The firmware on the printer has been verified that the support for the display is enabled. After some experimenting, it was determined that the sockets on the display board were indeed correct. What I had to do was SWAP the Exp1 and Exp2 cables on the display board. In other words, Exp1 on MCB goes to Exp2 on the display board and Exp2 on the MCB goes to Exp1 on the display board. Since I trust the Raise3D MCB board, the only explanation is that the two sockets on the display board were mislabeled. Regardless, the unit is up and running fine.

This worked out of the box
I got this to replace a screen on my Lulzbot Taz 6 and it only needed to be plugged in to get it to work.
