Ancient Politics & Religion Problems
I like to read about Ancient Egypt and Lord Hani’s adventures are very good books if you want to know how people lived in those times. The characters are very genuine, some of them you will like, some of them you won’t, just like you do it in a real-life, and I think that this is the most valuable part of this series (I read two books til now). This book is about the king’s wives’ intrigues and court plots while, at the same time, we can get a grip of what was happening in the temples of the now forbidden religion, which is for me, a very interesting part. The end is, just like in the first book, very quick, too quick, and thus, somehow unsatisfying, but there are plenty of happy endings, especially if you prefer romance.

Loved the book
Very well written with, humor, adventure and mystery abounding. The only drawback was the difficulty in remembering the Egyptian names. This is the second book in the series and I look forward to the next one.

Multifaceted mystery
Character names a bit long and confusing to keep straight. Good list at the beginning of the book was very helpful. Lots of twists and turns and a great pace kept me reading every chance I had.

An enjoyable read.
I don't know why Ms Holmes seems to think that tears form in the nose instead of the eyes, but her book is well written and the characters well developed. Just the right mix of mystery and action, interesting plot development, and loving family life.

I enjoyed reading this book.
I enjoyed reading “The Crocodile Makes No Sound, A Lord Hani Mystery” by N.L. Holmes, an intriguing ancient Egyptian thriller that captured my attention quickly. I liked the way the brilliant author who has extensive ancient Egyptian expertise begins the book with a map of what Egypt empire looked like over a thousand years before the common era. Also, I liked the way the author provides a fascinating reference to the background of the characters, a Glossary of Gods, and terms and places that introduced me to the exceptional tale about to be told.I did not read the first story in this mystery series and understand this is the second book in the series and the glossaries were particularly useful and drew me into this ancient story.I also felt the author writes very well and is highly descriptive in setting scenes. For example,“Dawn had just begun to spread its sweet pale light over the walled garden. The birds awakened, twittering, and calling. Qenyt, his pet heron, stalked silently around the perimeter of the pool in search of unwary frogs, lifting her burnished legs with angular grace. In the sycomores, the crickets were falling silent, and the cicadas had not yet begun their roar.”In my opinion, the author also created exactly the perfect pace for the story with the plot and subplots taking many twists and turns with unexpected events. I also like the action, thrills, mysterious disappearances, and other exciting and dramatic events that increase and become more intense as the story progresses. All in all, I felt the entire story is fascinating and very entertaining written by an author who is highly specialized and qualified to write historical fiction on ancient Egypt which exceptionally enhanced this beautifully written story.Very well done and highly recommended! It was my pleasure to receive a free copy of this book, but that does not in any way affect my opinion about this very entertaining story.

Murder, Intrigue and a Healthy Dose of Subterfuge
N. L. Holmes’ ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ is an excellent example of thoughtful, engaging historical fiction that offers readers a deep-dive into ancient Egypt by way of a compelling, politically-fueled mystery.Set in ancient Egypt, ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ picks up where the first ‘Lord Hani’ mystery (‘Bird in a Snare’) left off, once again following the fictional storyline of Lord Hani, an actual person plucked from the pages of history. With book two, Hani quickly gets drawn into a religious conflict that’s brewing between the ‘old guard’ and Akhenaten, a ruler bent on religious reform—a conflict that ultimately places his own family in harm’s way. What follows is a story rife with murder, intrigue and a healthy dose of subterfuge, one featuring a carefully constructed cast of characters whose motivations are constantly in question.Throughout the novel Holmes puts her archaeology background to good use, painting the background of her story with precise, vivid strokes and populating it with realistic, nuanced characters. While reading the first book in this series will definitely add to the overall context of some of Hani’s early decisions, ‘The Crocodile Makes No Sound’ is ultimately a stand-alone story, one that can be enjoyed as a first-entry to what is a four-part series. With an impeccably paced plot and an abundance of unexpected twists and turns, Holmes has managed to provide readers with a novel that bridges the gap between literary fiction and page-turning suspense—a must-read for fans of anything ‘Egypt’ and historical fiction alike!

Conspiracy in high places.
Easy five stars. The intricate home life of Lord Hani provides fresh challenges that require careful and tactful diplomacy. A satisfying plot involves the royal family with deadly consequences if solutions go wrong.
