Really a great primer

It's the best primer in Sanskrit I believe, for its detailed and step-by-step lessons inside. Also the seller in India delivered my goods in a really fast speed, thank you!

A favorable book for one keen and driven to learn sanskrit

I have been using these books ( Vol 1 and 2) for about 2 years... They in fact clear up many questions I have had on sanskrit, and for this I am grateful to the author. In fact I'd recommend the book . Yet if the author asked me for improvements I would have a nice list:1. The durability of the 2 volumes - I have re-glued both volumes several times. So, a better binding method is needed. I was going to get this professionally done, yet the costs exceed the actual price of the books ( by 2X to 3X).2. The layout of the chapters are initally okay, yet after a while they just do not seem intuitive to me for easy use. I am always fumbling trying to find a reference point to review. I have many notes to help guide me in the book and attached to it.3. There are page sections that are missing ( if asked I will go fetch the page number); it is a summary graphic for the many-many rules that accompany this 'polished language'4. The organization and explanation of the 8 cases (for me) could have been better laid out and more useful examples offered.5. Also , sample verses in Devanagari converted to transliteration would also be helpful ; this was used in many lessons.6. The good part: I appreciate using the bhagavad gita as a reference for practice - this is a highlight. There are a handful of sloka-s ( verses) that re delightful.7. The very-very basics ( of the sounds/aksara/varna) was well done and helpful.8. Definitions of singular, dual, and plural was spot on and useful.I do recommend the book... I am now getting "The Sanskrit Language" by Walter Harding Maurer; I will fist 'test drive' it from the library and if useful will then purchase it on Amazon ( 800+ pages ). I will report back and update this review and compare/contrast the two. Yet I see this book("The Sanskrit Language" by Walter Harding Maurer) more intermediate than entry level.Hope this helps...

Three Stars

Not as good as the Maurer textbook but still useful for the beginner.

Best books to learn Sanskrit through English. Contains Original Sanskrit text in Devanagari.

Probably best book for leaning Sanskrit through English. Plus point of this book is that it contents original Sanskrit text in Devanagari along with its English translation.Author also seems to be very well versed with Sanskrit sources/culture.

Could do with a revision

This book is the second part of Egenes' "Introduction to Sanskrit", and like part one it is well structured and offers plenty of exercises to rehearse the material of each chapter. If you started with Part 1, of course you want to continue with Part 2.Unfortunately some of the explanations appear a bit clumsy or even leave you with more questions than answers. After almost 30 years of it's first edition in 1989 and two revisions, the reader/student is still stumbling across various mistakes which by now should have been addressed. For decades this book has been a true revelation compared to other textbooks, but meanwhile "The Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit" has shown what a really good textbook can look like.
