Classic story - disturbing illustrations
I probably have this book in about six or seven versions and formats. Paperbacks, hardbacks, lift the flaps, antique copies & new copies. This is the first one I own that is illustrated by Charles Santore though. The images are all really really sad and my three year old showed huge concern and sadness for Peter Rabbit. Having looked through other copies I own illustrated by Beatrix Potter, I can’t say her images are as harrowing or depressing as these. Santore is a talented and quality illustrator but the images were so grown up and a bit too honest. And the final straw came in the last page with accompanying image where all the rabbits including the mother look like they are succumbing to myxomatosis disease. This book provoked questions about mortality, the food chain and violence that other copies haven’t ever prompted in my child; I don’t know at this point if that’s a positive or not. The cover is great, so I’ll just keep it as a display book.

The true Peter Rabbit
Love this book. It is the original narrative and not an updated more modern English. Beautiful illustrations.

I love Santore's version of B. POTTER'S classic.
The reproductions are muddy. I was disappointed with this low quality edition. Charles Santore is an epic illustrator. He deserves better respect from his publisher. It's hard to imagine that anyone would re illustrate Beatrix Potter! Charles Santore has made a lovely book but I will always love the originals best. I am ordering the oversised lap board book to compare and donating this one to the school library.
